Looking at the Mobil 1 web site I notice a couple of things new (to my old eyes):

1) There is a Mobil 1 Racing 0W50 that is said to be available in May 2010.

2) Didn't there used to be a Mobil 1 Racing 0W20? If so, it is not there anymore.

Questions:

A) What kind of engine would be suited for a 0W50 year round? Car? Boat? Snowmobile? Motorcycle?

B) Did anyone pony up and buy or try the Racing 0W20 before?

I am still working through my small stash of 40 of the Mobil 1 Racing 0W30 (Original version) bought for a close out price of $2 / qt a few years back. Works quite well, if you ask me - with its 1800ppm zinc content. However, I would like to find some of that Racing 0W20, if it is floating around somewhere at a similar price.

Well it's aimed at the race crowed that run highly loaded flat tappet designs like circle track, drag, sprint, road racing with extreme heat.

i still got 50 qts of the old formula R 0w30,stuffs loaded

i add just 1 qt per OC to boost the add pack thats all you need of this stuff.

The MSDS sheet gives a hint about its specs:

100 cst@40C
175.5 cst@100C

I would guess this 0W50 would be the ticket for an air cooled engine (generator, mower, motorcycle). I'm using Racing 0W30 in my generator. Some of you guys are already using Mobil 1 15W50 with great results (Remember Red Cap 15W50?)

When mob syn first became available in the UK, it was labelled Rally 1, later became mob 1. The grade was 5w-50.
I stuck to it as it was the best thing that happened to my cars.
In the 90's I had a golf GTI 1.8 16V with a very high revving (7200 rpm red line) & powerful engine (for the time!). It did over 200k miles with nearly mob all the time.
In late 90's mob changed the grade to 0w-40 (I guess to satisfy car makers to meet lower fuel consumption). The golf did not take to it as it started consuming the oil.
This became a known prob for a lot of cars and mob quickly introduced mob 1 15w-50 which I switched to. This resolved the oil consumption problem.
I guess they are now exploring the original grade again.
In my opinion though, 0w oil is too thin for high revving engines.
Bring back 5w-50

bonjo - The '0' rating is only when cold, at 0 deg F.
It is 10+ times thicker then than when hot.
So it is not too thin, but too thick.

the lower the number, the lower the viscosity (thinner in your terminology).
Oil viscosity changed with temp. Oil gets thinner as temp increases and not the other way round.
In a multigrade oil, the "W" (winter) rating is the visc at low temp; so a 0w- is thinner than a 5w- at cold temp.
Going from 5w-50 to 0w-50,will improve the cold starting and fuel consumption (& engine wear in the process)
