Hmm... MSDS shows -49C. And 17.5 cSt viscosity @ 100C.

Let's hope their product is more consistent than the information they provide in various pieces of literature...

Doesn't the PDS and the MSDS for oils often show differant numbers?

From what I've seen usually yes.

Here in Canada we've had Mobil 1's 5W-50 street oil for years.

They've stopped selling Mobil 1 5W-50 oil in all stores that I can see up here. This oil HAS been replaced by Mobil 1 15W-50, though - you'll find that at Walmart, CT, PartsSource...

Wow, a viscosity at 40C of 100 cst for a XW-50 oil is impressively low. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40's visc. at 40C is a little over 100 cst. Hopefully it's shear stability isn't poor.

They do not have a 0W20 racing oil anymore (it isn't on their website), it looks like just 0W30 and 0W50 now.

I want to know as well, the old formula had detergent/dispersant in it.

I would say there's some,,call and ask..

Here's a possible hint from Mobil's product page:
Quote:
Mobil 1 Racing 0w50 is recommended for applications where a higher viscosity and thicker oil film are required such as longer duration races where heat build-up may be an issue.

(emphasis mine)

I'm not sure if "longer duration races" means endurance races per se, which would be a slam-dunk. However, if they are even mentioning "longer duration races," I would strongly suspect that this oil has at least SOME detergent/dispersant properties.

The only caveat I would make is to emphasize that they still say it is not for street use. Compare this to Motul 300V, which is also labeled as a race oil but does not have the same warning against street use. There has to be a reason. It might be a bad reason, but we can't make that call unless we know what that reason is.

Mobil 1 Racing oils are proprietary formulations of low viscosity synthetic base oils fortified with SuperSyn and a component-blended additive system featuring high levels of anti-wear and friction reducing additives

Most race oils have some detergents and acid neutralizers in them.
RL's race oils have a TBN of about 2. One neat thing about RL is that all their street and race oils can be mixed to acheive whatever you want. If you want a higher TBN in a race oil then add some street oil of the grade you want.

Taking about Mobil 1 and racing, I was a the IRL race in Toronto yesterday. Mobil 1 is a sponsor and I saw cases of Mobil 1 0W-40 in some of the bits. Don't know conclusively that that is oil the teams are using in the Honda spec' 3.5L V8 engines all the teams use but they might? Wouldn't be my choice if I was running a team.

Then you wouldn't want to run an oil that offers lower friction (oil drag) because that would likely be cheating and we wouldn't want an unfair advantage......?

For example RL claims their ester based formulation provides 1 to 2 percent less friction vs other mineral or syn oils of the same viscosity.

I can resist anything but temptation!

Hi,
CATERHAM - At the Nurburgring in May for the ADAC 24hr event it was again obvious to me that lubricants were not a high priority in terms of Team time - electronics were! I had access to many Teams inner sanctums

Many factory sponsored and private Teams used standard Mobil 1 0W-40 (including Aston Martin)

It is true that some teams were running 0W-20 viscosity lubricants (including some BMW engines). These lubricants were race formulation specific and clearly endorsed as such. They carried no ACEA or API data

The time I spent with the Castrol Engineers was most enlightening on this subject

Mobil was nowhere to be seen as a sponsor!

As in; COMPLETE engine/drivetrain/suspension functions telemetry and data-logging??

Do you find that strange?

HI,
buster - I don't find that strange - they are very poor marketers IMO!

Perhaps I just don't get it when the major Euro Companies they are suppliers to were all there in a big way! Castrol and FUCHs were well represented with Technical staff and Hospitality facilities - even if low key
