For some items that is probably doable. For name brand oils that have to maintain licenses and certification, maybe not so much. But you can be sure that consideration on how to cheapen a product in light of these pressures is continuously in the thought process.
For many items, I think you are correct. For those like synthetic oils that STILL seem to carry a premium? Not sure. Canadian Tire is regularly, when they have their sales, cheaper than Walmart, and by a significant margin. Regular pricing is roughly the same as Walmart. Where I'd be concerned is house-brand products like Supertech where you now the supplier is being pressured to keep costs low (and thus, profits high).
Making "box store" versions of electronics, which have included laptops, desktops and TV's over the years, was pretty standard and typically involved some of the specs being tweaked so that these products couldn't readily be cross-shopped. Sometimes it was as simple as a different amount of RAM, but other times there were some bizarre changes made that you knew were solely driven by costing
