Howdy!

I have a Ford Focus 2005 with 160,000 miles. It doesn't use a single drop of oil, even over 10,000 mile OCIs.

Would you recommend Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w-20, or Mobil 1 Advanced (the fuel economy stuff) 0w-20? I plan to keep doing 10,000 mile OCIs.

Some people on BITOG seem to think that the Advanced isn't the best for long OCIs, but I do like the idea of the higher efficiency oil. Would my high-mileage car benefit from the HM add pack?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, I'd use an HM oil since the car is older with higher miles. I just did this a few months ago on the 05 Matrix to help condition the seals a little bit. You can run the HM next then after that try the Advanced and see if you prefer one over the other. You don't have to use an HM oil every interval but every so often isn't a bad idea.

Tig1 uses M1 AFE for 10k for like 39 years or close to it. That's enough for me

Either will work great for you.
Personally with that mileage I would probably lean towards HM oil. If your engine is that clean and not using oil though you will do great with either. Not sure how much mileage increase the Advanced will actually do. Try one this time and the other on the next change and let us all know how it goes.

Who or what is TIG? I've seen this mentioned around the forums (I'm a hardcore lurker) but don't know what it means!

Eww Castrol! PP HM is a great oil, but Mobil has a $15 rebate going on now for 5qts and a Mobil 1 filter--at $20 for the set after rebate, it's too good to pass up!

What seals are there to condition? Usually the 1.8 leaks from the t-chain tensioner, valve cover and oil pan in that order. Other leaks are not very common. I really doubt that any of those seal materials would be impacted by conditioner.

OP: I would use AFE 0W-20. It is an OE approved oil and should service you well. If you are doing intervals longer than what Ford recommends, I would use the EP 0W-20 product since ExxonMobil would support the interval that you are running.

The oil rebate for $12/5 qts is hard to pass up. But to spend $12-$13 on their oil filter to get another $3 rebate is not such a great deal imo. I can buy the same filter in a Fram Ultra for $5-$8. I used the M1 filters for several years too.

I have used M1 0-20AFE in my Focus and Fusion for several years now with great success at 10K OCIs.

+1

If you are burning/leaking oil, Id use HM oil, otherwise I would stick with the M1 0w20 at 10k interval should be easy. Worst case, you have need to have an extra bit of reassurance, you can use M1 0w20 EP for 3-4$ more.

Another vote for the Mobil1 0w-20. There have been many UOAs and this oil performs great. I'd run it 10K without even giving it a second thought.

In fact, that is what I'm doing now!

Really ?

That product has bee out that long ?

The original 5W20 M-1 has been around for over 40 years that I'm aware of.
In 1975 I used it in railway switch heaters, LPG "snow melters" (invented word), that blew hot air through duct work.
The blower engine was a single cylinder Briggs of about 5hp.
