Mobil 1 & Formula Shell

The local warehouse store carries Mobil 1 and Formula Shell full-synthetic in cases of six.

The M1 is $36.99 and the Shell is $27.99. But both oils alternate going on special. This month there is a $10-off coupon for Mobil 1, next month it's $9 off the Formula Shell.

Is there any difference? I know both are more than good enough for my cars but since they're so cheap on special and so close in price, even if there is a 1% difference, I'll take it.

Wow that is a good price for the Shell synthetic...

In my search for a used oil analysis or VOA of the SN formulation it didn't turn up many results but it is a hard oil to find.

Shell syn is made by SOPUS.
Mobil 1 is made by XOM.

The additive packages are different and the base oils are most likely different as well. Will your car know the difference, probably not.

Who is "they," how does Shell out perform Mobil 1, and which oil from Shell?

Which specific variety of M1? There's some significant differences between Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, Mobil 1 High Mileage, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck, Mobil 1 ESP, and "regular".

The Mobil 1 is the regular old 5w30 and 10w30. Same grades for Formula Shell.

Shell Formula seems like a very good oil synthetic or conventional. Mobil 1 meets some very challenging spec's like the HTO-06 and Dexos1, so it depends on the application. In any case, I don't think B.J.'s is much of a bargain when it comes to oil...

Mobil 1 5w30 is a very good oil.

Don't bother with the 10w30.

M-1 would have a very slight edge. But if your cars are not designed to take "advantage" of said edge why spend extra cash for it?
