I have been using the M1 403 filter and changing it and the oil at approx 5000 miles. Would i be "cheating" if I ran this filter for 2 drain intervals? this is an EGR/DPF equipped engine and the oil is very black when i drain at 5000 miles.

What's the service interval for 6.7? It can not be 2500 miles. 6 months, maybe ..but not 2500. No one could afford to run one commercially. You would use an ocean of oil and a parts room worth of filters.

In my older '97 Cummings the oil is black in a few thousand miles, that is just common with diesels. I have run the M1 filter for over 10,000 miles with no problem. 5,000 miles sounds quite a bit under the factory recommendation. Not sure what your's is, but mine is 6,000, the newer '04 or so, 7,500. Personally, I would do oil and filter at recommended interval. If you want to do the 5K changes with 10K filter, I see no problem.

The 05 5.9, iirc, is basically 6months. I know the mileage is 15k or 7.5k depending on whether normal or severe, but I think (I could be wrong) 6months is the time frame in either case.

That may be only for 2003 and up. I know that they originally had different maintenance schedules depending on the chassis it was installed in. In the pickups they appeared to wimp out ..but in larger stuff they had to be competitive for lower down time.

Here's what I found:

Every 24,000 km [15,000 mi], 500 Hours, or 6 Months Section 5
* Fuel Filter (Spin-on Type) - change1
* Lubricating Oil and Filters - change2
* Engine Coolant Antifreeze - check
* Batteries - check
* Battery Cables and Connections - check

This confirms the 6month deal
