So what's the latest word on Mobil 1 Extended Performance? I mean, besides the "they're charging too much", etc.

Myself, I was considering EP as not much of a step up from M1 reg. line, and not on the same level as M1's beefier lines and Amsoils lines. However, I was looking at Amsoil's comparison chart for ATM 10w30 (vs. the likes of EP, PP, etc - 10 other oils in all), and EP seems effectively equivalent to ATM for all seven metrics - and the two of them (ATM and EP) pretty much spank all other contenders on most of the tests.

The above, plus the fact that I ran EP in my mom's 98 Taurus for one full year (almost to the day) and approx. 10k miles (my mom lost her maint. book - so this is a guestimate) - the used oil analysis was excellent (I'll include Blackstones comments below).

So given Amsoil's own lab results and this one real world test, I'm starting to mentally push EP back onto the Top Shelf w/ the beefy boys.

What says BITOG ?

(Blackstones comments: "ERIC: This first analysis on your mom's Taurus looks good. This oil was in place 10,000 miles, which is more than twice the miles most people run the oil in this engine, but wear still looks great. That is a good sign of normal wearing parts and that your mom drives carefully. Air and oil filtration (see silicon
and insolubles) appeared to be normal and we did not find any gas, moisture or anti-freeze in the sample. The oil's viscosity was okay for a 10w30-grade. Nice engine! You could check back next year for another look, but this engine is showing no signs of slowing down.")

BTW, this has probably already been noted on BITOG - but my local Walmarts have reduced EP to $27+ and upped the reg. lines to $21+.

Schmoe, I'm not saying they chged it (except the price). It's just that it's been out a while now and I was wondering if there's any consensus forming on BITOG (which I know is a pipe dream

With all of Mobil's products coming in at #2, from Amsoil's own testing, they can't be that bad! LOL

Gear oil test - #2
MC oil test - #1/#2
Motor oil test - #2

Amsoil shows better wear numbers in oil analysis and has lower volatility as reported by most that use either product.

SargeGTO - two years old. But has ATM or EP or PP or the other players reformulated in the last two years?

Buster - Better wear numbers? But for which - Amsoil vs. EP or Amsoil vs. M1 reg. line? Also, is #2 in lab results something to sneeze at? The numbers are so close (especially compared to some of the other competitors) - there may not even be a significant statistical difference between them. And will the differences show up in the 250k miles you put on your car. You use ATM for 250k w/ 15k OCIs. I use EP for 250k w/ 15k OCIs. Can you tell the winner at the end?

EP's lab results are breathing down the neck of ATM. Yet ATM nears $2/qt more when bought in gallon (5qt for EP) quantities. EP can be bought locally. You add shipping to ATM and you've got serious price discrepancy.

I'm just saying, if I wanted to buy ATM, then why not just go to Wally and get EP. (I faced the equivalent decision 10 yrs ago, and I went to Wally.) But before I get hold firmly to this opinion in 2008, I wanted to hear from others on the merits (or lack of) for EP.

Even though this test is two years old, I think it is important to note how well Pennzoil Platinum rated in these test. Excellent oil for much less money!

PP is supposedly mean oil (from my BITOG readings - though note that it didn't fair well in the oxidation test). I've never heard BITOGr's claim it as a long drain alternative, so it's not on my radar.

I highly respect the all the Amsoil lines. Brilliantly engineered products IMO. And I was on Amsoil's web site yesterday doing my usual coveting of black gold when I zeroed in on EP performance on the ATM test. It just looks like EP is essentially an equivalent oil to ATM (from Amsoils own test). This, and my own real world results has EP back in my own Top Shelf list of oils.

eric, all of these companies compete with one another and buy from the same handful of additive suppliers. I think the quality of Amsoil over the last 2 years has improved. Things are always changing and what is good now, might not be down the road.

On here, the oil that shows lower wer, and oil consumption is usually the winner. In that case, Amsoil > M1

On the track, oils like Redline that are extremely shear stable and save engines under ridiculous amounts of Hp, are winners. On BITOG, they are not.

Bill from Utah has put 100's of thousands of miles on his cars and only uses the cheapest oil available. In his mind, neither of these brands would be best.

Tests done in June 2005. Mobil 1 Extended Performance at the time did have different formulations than now. Here's the PDS I saved from August 2005. Columns don't line up but note the sulfated ash. This was when they had much more metallic-based additives.

What I`ve always wondered is what is the exact difference between Mobil 1 (silver cap) and Mobil 1 (Extended Performance). I always buy the 15W50 silver cap.

Wife's Aztek has had over 60,000 miles on Mobil EP 5w30 with no problems. No seal leaks etc... Before Mobil EP it had Mobil conventional oil in it. Not saying Amsoil is bad or anything but, when I had it in my 1998 S-10 pickup 4 cylinder it shot the oil pressure through the roof and mileage decreased. Amsoil in use with the S-10 was 5w30.
