Long Story-Short, I usually buy MC filters, decided to try a Pure One, AAP was out of stock, gave me the Mobil 1 for $5.00.

I run 6-8k OCIs (5w-20 SynPower, 2000 Taurus, 3.0 ohv, 170k on the odo) and it usually takes me 9 to 12 months to rack up the miles. I know I got a good deal on this filter, and I hate to sound cheap, but it is supposed to be Extended Performance - can I run it for 2 OCIs?

It just seems a waste to change out an expensive filter after the same interval I can get with the cheaper MC.

I use the low price, actually free after rebate, Pep Boys house brand Proline oil filter for 2 OCI of 6-7k/6mo with dino in '94 LS400. I had been using oil filter for up to 15k/12mo for many years in that car without any engine problem.

Id run it for any interval. Cant think of to many better filters than the M1. Throw it away on your next oci though. No sense in using a filter again. Especially after a year. Dont be cheap. I cant imagine oil changes huring your wallet if you only do one a year.

You can grab the FL400s filters for under $4 at walmart and they would easily handle your 6-8k intervals, plus they have the correct location of the bypass valve designed for your engine which the mobil 1 does not.

You could possibly use the Mobil 1 filter for 2 oil changes but its not something i would be willing to do with such a length of time on the filter. If it was less than 6 months and about 5-6k miles on each oil fill it would be less of a problem i would think, but that much time (up to 2 years) on the filter could be cause for concern.

On many old cars, they said to replace the oil filter every other oil change, BUT that was when an OCI was only 3,000 miles.

I agree, change it out after one year OR your normal OCI, cheap protection.

I have used Mobil 1 filters ever since they came out in the 90s with 10K OCIs with no problems at all. A friend is doing 15K OCIs with his 03 Windstar and Mobil 1 5w30 Extended Protection. We cut one filter apart and it was fine. As for using the same oil filter through 2 OC cycles, I wouldn't do it because I don't like the idea of putting in 4 Qts of new oil with .2-.5 qts of old, especially for the length of time you are talking about.

It's rated for 15,000 miles so I would think you should be OK for two oil changes using the same filter.

I suppose you could let the filter drain out for a while too? That could help that old oil problem but why bother?

I'm thinking about changing the oil tomorrow. If I do, I'll put on the Mobil filter and worry about leaving it on for 2 OCIs in a year or so.

I've done 2 OCs of 7.5k miles each on those. As long as your car is mechanically sound, it should be able to do the job for 15k miles

Typically .5 to 1.5 qts of old oil (depending on the engine) are left behind every oil change - even with a filter change, which dwarfs the typical .2-.3 quarts left in the filter.

Some feel they must get every last drop out of the sump in order for it to be a job well done. That does not worry me like it used to. If I have a 3.2 quart sump, I'll do a step further and do a cold oil change or not let it drain all the way to retain that fifth. The dipstick still shows fresh, brand new oil.

When Walmart had them on clearance I bought two M1-104 filters for $4 each. I put one on my dad's car and it been there for 2.5 years, I change the oil on his car every 6 months.

Having 1/2 quart to 1 quart of old oil will not hurt the engine as long as the engine has clean fresh oil added every so often.
