Going to try out the M1 EP and the goal is to leave it in for 5-6 months. In that time, I should only accumulate 5-6 thousand miles. yeah yeah..I could use cheaper synthetic and do that...or conventional...but with regard to the EP, it is only 3.00 more than regular M1.

Has anyone had any experience with synthetic oils conditioning seals? I know it won't hurt them, but will it help them?

All I know is M1 EP is the "Top Dog" on the majors market. I am amazed at the physical condition of that oil after tough running. Most if not all "syns" nowadays are absolutely fine for seals.

Yeah, I figured as much. I guess that some the HM marketing bothers me. I just wish we knew of regular (the non-HM labeled stuff) has any capability of rejuvenating engine seals…if the HM marketing holds true and that is possible to do anyway.

First of all.....5 or 6K miles on EP is not an issue...it can very easily be done.

My question is....Why don't you just extend your OCI on the EP to 1 year or 10 to 12K ?....Why waste such a top-tier oil.... on such a short OCI. Its a great long-term oil...and it would be a waste of time, $$$, and resources.

For 6 month, 5K to 6K....just use a quality conventional like Mobil Super 5000, PYB, or VWB.

I'm not even going to get into this. It's just a preference...It's my money so I'll throw it around how I like. This is strictly about the question I asked. I just wish that if M1 EP was so great...then it should condition seals along with keeping the current SN spec, unlike M1 HM

You can condition seals with a quality HM conventional.....

Synthetic will not hurt your seals and really won't help them per se. Certain synthetics have more esters that can make a bad seal already begin to leak with more solvency but, that shoudn't be a bit of problem for a well maintain and low mileage vehicle. Hope this helps.

well, my engine seaps oil around the valve covers...never have to add oil. just seapage. bad idea to try M1 EP on this van with 114K in regard to that?

I would think 5K & 5 months would be a safe OCI since that oil has a proven track record with a high TBN. I am using Mobil 0W40 and I am thinking of going 6 month OCI's since that vehicle gets about 8K miles per year.

But what about the previous comment about esters making a bad seal leak worse? Is this a potential issue w/M1 EP?

Change the valve cover gaskets. I do not know what the valve cover gasket material is ,RTV ,some kind of composite or cork. The seal swell which is formulated by additive package in an oil it self and is common to all quality oils and is usually for the crankshaft seal and valve guide seal material in modern engines. Have you tryed to tighten the valve cover bolts? is the crankcase ventilation system operating properly? but since this is BOB is The oil Guy oil fixes everything wrong with your car and Amsoil changed at 3,000 mile intervals will assure you will never have a flat tire!!!

I am certain that EP, as all the M1 line, has some esters in it, but as for seals, fear not EP will not cause your engine to leak any more than any other oil. Yes, it is your money to do with as you please, but as a very long time 10K OCI doer with M1 oils, longer OCIs are no problem.
