I thought my eyes deceived me in the AAP this afternoon 🤔

If we go by their 1996 cut off, I assume this oil is no newer than API SH?

I wonder what is in it since it has no ratings at all? Probably good for older cars though since it says it doesn't protect cats, that is usually a good sign. Also 10w30 is a good compromise for older cars since other brand oils are usually very thick for classic cars.

Clearly there's enough demand to make it worthwhile to offer this stuff.
KInda sad, as it's the total opposite of the EV regime (keeping older vehicles on the road).

Side note....it is crazy what oil is going for at the box stores. Lots of $10.99-$11.99's there. Walmart is starting to catch up too. BTW....6 quarts of Mobil1 EP 5W-30 goes for about $50 shipped from RockAuto :)

I was just at Autozone this weekend to get some oil for the snowblower. Cheapest conventional 5W-30 was $8.99!

1300 ppm zinc? My flat tappet cams are drooling over this oil. I didn't know it existed.
That would be the phosphorous, though it's clear that the marketeers at Mobil know that Joe Average associates ZDDP with "Zinc" and not the actual anti-wear part of the compound: phosphorous, or they'd be putting "high phosphorous formula" on the label.

The year range makes no sense to me. I would have to guess cars older than 1951 would also do fine with this oil, and I am surprised it goes all of the way to '96, since I thought oils like this shouldn't be used with cat converters.

Any one have any opinions on how this stuff compares to Valvoline VR1?

Yeah, whatever, let them eat cake.
Like GTX Classic, it’s just another major going after the boutique niche market.
To me, GTX Classic was a cool product that was offered in the wrong viscosity. It was only available in 20W-50 which I think was a mistake and likely the biggest reason why it isn't around anymore.

Mobil choosing to produce a 10W-30 for this space is spot on. I expect this to do pretty well in the market.
