MMO and Castrol EDGE in Buick Rendezvous

If your oil level on the dipstick is at the full mark, then you should add no more than 1/2 pint (8oz) MMO, which is the amount I added to my '00 E430 last night before I change the oil next month.

Also I did go ahead and post on the MMO site, no replies yet, but I will copy over what they say.

I've added a pint of MMO the last 1000 miles of my OCI's many times, even when I had a full reading on the dipstick. Being 16 ounces over the full mark with a 5 qt sump is not going to hurt anything. If you are the type of person who is full of energy, and worried, get a Fumoto valve. Then you can drain off a pint or qt of oil and top up with MMO. For years and years I added 5 qts to the 4.5 qt sump in my 3.0L Aerostar with no ill effects.

I'm a big fan of MMO, but I would not use it in this application. If you are concerned about the cleanliness of your engine and want to use MMO, then I wouldn't be running Edge for 10-12k miles.

I'd be thinking of using a good conventional oil with MMO for a few short changes, then switch to a good synthetic w/o MMO.

I've run MMO out 4-5k miles with dino oil and I'm currently 4 months into an OCI with PYB and MMO. However, I've never used MMO with Group 3/4 synthetics. I don't see the point.

There is nothing wrong with overfilling towards the end of an OCI, just keep it reasonable. A pint wouldn't hurt much.

Somebody posted on my post at the MMO forum and gave a link to his post a couple years back that Rich Kelley told him. Here it is:

"Orangedotfever: I switched to synthetic oil to reap the benefits of extended oil change intervals. I change oil at 12K to 15K miles or once a year. I only use Amsoil, Royal Purple or Mobil-1 Extended for these extended periods. Is MMO good for these extended periods between oil changes?

Rich Kelly: Marvel Mystery has not been tested at extended oil intervals. It is compatible with synthetics so that is not a problem. If you are doing severe type of driving, i.e. short trips and lots of stop and go traffic, you may want to change your oil more often. Short trips and stop and go driving use up the additive packages in the oil much faster and stead high speed highway driving.

Orangedotfever: My driving is almost all highway miles to work and back so that’s not a problem. Sounds like to be safe I should wait until about a month or two before my normal oil change time and then drain one quart of old oil and add a quart of MMO. This should give me around 2000 to 5000 miles to run the MMO and then change all the oil."

So it looks like I'll be adding the MMO to the last 1000 miles of this change. I only put 4.5 quarts in last time. I can't remember if it is completely up to the Full Mark or not, I'll have to go take a look.
It is not like I am supper obsessed about the cleanliness of the engine, but I do want to keep it clean and that's why I want to use the MMO. More than likely I am only going to go to 10,000 miles OCI with the EDGE oil. I'll just drop some MMO in at 9,000 miles and do the change at 10,000. Thanks, if anyone has any more suggestions I am still listening. Thanks again!

Rich Kelly is the MMO expert. Adding MMO for the last 1000-2000 miles of an extended drain might just be the ticket. I would think it would help oil that is nearing its useful service life, and certainly not do any harm. I'm not a believer in extended OCI's, I've always fallen under "severe service" and follow those guidelines.

I think you have a good solid plan!

If you are thinking about taking this OCI out to 10,000 miles it might be a good idea to take an oil sample out and get a UOA done at 5000 miles or 7500 miles too see if your oil can go 10,000 miles.

Is your vehicle used for short trip driving, like 20 miles or less, does it see alot of stop and go driving in heavy traffic.

Or, does this vehicle see alot of highway driving at a sustained speed for over 20 miles or so.

A 10,000 mile OCI is alright under the right conditions.

I would not run MMO that long.
Why not add 1/2 qt of MMO 1,000 miles or so before your change is due?
This would be a better approach.

That is why I suggested adding the MMO toward the end of the extended OCI, 1000-2000 miles isn't that long. I'd be more concerned running an oil for 10,000 miles without having some data to back up the interval. c3po nailed it.

People who run oil longer than the suggested interval in the OM should really have the oil tested and base their extended drain intervals once they have the data.

mechtech2, it looks like he is following your advice.

I already have the Blackstone kit to get a sample and see if I can do the 10,000 mile OCI. EDGE is rated for 15,000 miles so I think me doing 10,000 should be fine.

Let me get this straight. 1. You have a 7 year old GM V6 that isn't consuming 16oz of oil in 10-12K miles? 2. You're looking to improve on that through additive/flush/mojo? 3. Why?

The whole reason of adding the MMO is to either 1) Clean out anything that is in there and 2) To prevent any further build up of anything.

Before you post anything dumb again make sure you read the whole thread before posting something I already said earlier. Thank you.

Just went and checked the Rendezvous' oil level and she burned a little less than 1/4 QT of oil in about 5,500 miles. That's not too bad and the oil still looks great!
At this rate I should be able to put the pint of MMO in at the 1,000 miles before the change at 10,000 miles.

Well I was able to put that pint of MMO in in the last 1000 miles of that change with Edge. Changed it today and man did it come out black!

I put 4 quarts of Castrol Edge back in along with the last 12 oz of MMO I had left in the bottle. We'll see how black this oil comes out with the next change. lol

I am going to try Pennzoil Ultra for the next change. Got a good deal on a 5 qt jug at walmart so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I think I am going to continue using MMO in the oil with the Rendezvous. If it keeps cleaning out the engine and keeps it clean I don't see any harm. lol
I think in the future though, I'll just put it in the last 1000 miles like I did on the change in the past.
