Ok, we sit here and argue what oil is the best, so why not used them all

To get the best of everything a person should just buy 6 differnt branded quarts of oil and dump them in together. They all say they are compatible.

Then you would have the best from every company.

Wonder if you have a good point there. I mean, you can mix different brands of gasoline with no harm to you fuel system... Right now my tank has Shell, BP, and trace amounts of Marathon in it.

If your medicines clash, you die. If your oils clash, you get an extra 2 ppm iron on your UOA. Just ain't the same.

FWIW, I did my original fill with Formula Shell, and have since topped up with Pennzoil, Quaker State, and Pitt Penn. No visible problem, though I go through oil like Elizabeth Taylor goes through husbands.

Mixing oil is for people who can't make a decision. Just choose the right oil and use it. Nothing wrong with using up an odd quart, or topping off with another oil, but there are no benefits to mixing oils.

Mix only from the same product line for VISCOSITY. That's one thing I like about Chevron/Havoline products, all the same base oil and chemistry.

why settle for 2 viscosity base oils in the0 mix when you can have 10 different VI base oils int he mix! A happier and more homogenous oil of your chosen resultant weight? Perhaps... its just the add packs anyone needs to worry about really.. eh? eh??? I bet if an oil blender could formulate the ULTIMATE IDEAL OIL and cost was no option, there would sure as ________ be more base oils of diff. VIs, less to no VIIs. Why dont blenders do it? Because no one is going to carry a ton of diff VI bases just to make a run of the mill oil, generally it'll be 2 bases and VIIs to suit. EH???

I'm fixing to do just what we are talking about - mix oils on the next OC on my 4.3 Chevy PU. After freezer testing oil to the point of having no room for ice cream, I've got to get rid of this stuff! Sooooo I'm planning to make up a 5QT fill with the following...1qt BMW 5w30 hipo synthetic, 1qt Castrol Syntec 5w50, 1qt Castrol Syntec 5w20, 1qt GC and 1qt Castrol Syntec 5w30. With this brew I should have a whiz bang GRP III, IV, V oil which I'll run for 5k with a ST oil filter. The OC after that will be ...1qt M1 0w40, 1qt M1 5w30, 1qt M1 15w50, 1qt M1 10w30 and 1qt M1 5w20. For the 'ol 4.3 it will be an interesting 10k miles don't you think?

I don't think it is a good idea to mix several brands of oil. They can have different additive chemistry. It is better I think to try one brand at a time until you find one you like. Actually, it is hard to tell much about motor oil unless it is tested in VOAs and UOAs like at this web site.

Judging from what people have found out at this web site it seems that Chevron and Halvoline are good conventional motor oils. They might have a slight edge over some other brands.

You can get into a real argument over synthetic oils. But of oils that are commonly available Mobil 1 looks pretty good. I was starting to like Pennzoil Platinum a lot until I found out (at this web site) that they have gone back to a Group III base for that oil. Maybe you might as well use a conventional oil.

pokin' fun...

Here's a mix for you...based on a 4 quart system...

take 1 quart of generic 10w30 SM/SL oil; add enough thick STP oil treatment to equal 1 quart; add enough Smoke B'Gone to equal 1 quart; add enough Greased Lightning 8 oz thick additive (with PTFE) to equal 1 quart...do a VOA on it and see what the heck ya got...

wait until winter when the ambient temperature is @ 20-32 degrees Farenehit and change your oil with this mix and then see if the engine will actually turn over...wait 3,000 miles (if the engine hasn't fallen apart yet) and do a UOA on the stuff and see what the heck is left...

My current fill in my saab is 2 qts of 15W50 M1 SL, 2 qts of 5W30 M1 SM, and .5 qts of Redline 5W30. I think that's a mix worth keeping....

I had to get rid of the Redline somehow!
