If you bought a new vehicle today?

1.) I would use severe service intervals
2.) I would use a certified engine oil, of the next higher grade, for example if the engine called for 0w20, I would use 0w30 or 5w30.......adhereing to the global guidlines of the viscosity not the US schedule.
3.) I would run before an oil change, one full serving of a fuel additive with PEA for gas, or equal in diesel applications.
1) This was the third oil and filter change since new in its first10k miles, the last having the carbon being 5.6k miles. They were almost all highway, when my wife took a road trip from central Texas to Wisconsin, Canada, and back home. OLM was at 50%.

2) Did not switch viscosity, but using Amsoil Signature Series since the first OCI at 494 miles. About to switch to HPL Premium Plus PCMO.

3) I ran a bottle of Redline SI-1 through it will a full tank of fuel, then changed the oil and filter about half way through the next full tank of fuel. Prior to that, I had used a bottle of Amsoil PI before the previous oil and filter change.

We have a miscommunication. He has a brand new vehicle. He was considering changing oil & filter early this first time for early removal of breakin metal wear particles from oil. I'm saying there's no need to change oil or filter early if he puts magnets on the oil filter to capture all sizes of metal particles from the oil.
No miscommunication. I didn't say not to use a filter magnet, and have thought about getting one myself to see what I can see when the filter's cut open. I said "Personally, if the oil has ran long enough to need to be changed, then the filter needs to be changed, also.". It is my opinion and what I will continue to do, though even Honda recommends the filter be changed every two OCIs. The case of 12 Pentius filters cost less than $5 each. Amazon has raised the price when I bought these in July.

If you haven't seen this YT video, these Russians form a transparent oil filter to see exactly how oil flows through it. They've done other videos including making a transparent oil pan, and even side of a block, where they tested what happens when you overfill the oil.

Just bought a 2026 Honda Odyssey EX-L. I got 1 free oil change from the dealer.

I did a "break-in" oil change at 890 miles, then will change oil again at 2000 miles. Using Idemitsu oil 0W-20 and OEM filter (15400-RTA-003) then at 5000 will get the free oil change from the dealer. Hopefully they let me use it that early, cause the sales guy who helped me get the car said they will do it when the wrench light comes on. Oil change every 4000/5000 miles with OEM filter.
