"mini rant" regarding furnace issues/HVAC companies....

It's funny (maybe) our new home has name brand equipment and I was kind of impressed the builder used it. Until this forum *LOL*
Its Lennox but a basic unit I think and I am glad for that.
As far as your leak, a friend in my old community had a leak in his Heil evaporator at around the 7 year mark years back. Of course they wanted to sell him a new unit. He got a bunch of estimates and found someone who would replace or repair the coil (I forgot which) paid around $1,400 if I remember correctly, he has since moved (like we did) and the unit was still working fine 8 years after he moved.
I won't ruin your day then and tell you about my Lennox A/C, for which they settled a class action on (leaky evaporator coil), and still wouldn't honor warranty - twice. Both times were by a official Lennox dealer. They just shrugged their shoulders. Corporate wouldn't respond to a vm, or registered letter. :ROFLMAO:

I'll chime in! About 2 years ago summertime heat and I turned on the AC, all operational sounds were normal, meaning the fan was blowing, then I realize that I was sweating bullets and things were not cooling off. I did the usual checks and noticed that the outside condenser motor was not running at all just the internal interior fan was blowing. Not knowing anything about HVAC systems I called a local company, and speaking with him they wanted 125 to do a service call evaluation and estimate if needed.

The service tech over the phone said since the condenser motor is not spinning it most likely is frozen since it was a 10 year old unit, and that would be in the neighborhood of 3400. That would include new motor testing the system blah blah blah blah.

I called another company same blah blah and spoke with a few local homeowners which knew less than I did at this point! :)
I proceeded to search the internet for more information as to why my condenser motor is not spinning. The long story short is that it came back to a faulty capacitor on the outside unit.

I did a simple home test with my voltmeter following the directions. And of course I was Ultra safe by powering everything off and I knew that capacitors from experience do hold a charge, so I tried to discharge the capacitor, but the immediate result was no charge and bad ohm reading.
Ordered the capacitor online for $14 and took a gamble that that was it.

That was the fix a bad capacitor and I lucked out and had cold air and still using the AC.

The more I read about AC HVAC units and like that YouTube video shows the sequence of operation gives a person added knowledge so when they do call the HVAC Tech, they at least know what they are talking about. Good luck
Anyone with an AC unit should locate the capacitor, take a picture of it and the numbers on it. Then order a spare on Amazon for <$20. Nine out of ten times that’s what goes bad and takes 15 minutes to replace. Lots of YouTube videos. Service call will cost hundreds even by an honest company.

I agree, but there are at least 2 on a conventional system - one on the air handler, and one on the condenser. I also keep a spare contactor for the condenser as well. To your point, there all under $20 online. An AC contractor will want $200 plus labor.

I also bought a kick-start to have around. There a bit controversial, at least on youtube, so do your own research.

Like I posted in another HVAC post. I buy all the common parts after 3 years of a new furnace. Igniter, pressure switch, inducer fan, roll out switch, My DC drive Trane 97% is now12+ years old and all it has had is one igniter that whole time and no service calls. Because I live in Minnesota and you always have problems on a Saturday night at 10:00PM and it is-10 to -20 below

The AC unit I change the main contactor and fan capacitor every 7-8 years. Time to order those. on my 25 year old Carrier 2 ton 410A that was the first year 410A came out. I will have some come out this summer to check the charge since 410A will start increasing big time now. I will install an Inverter A/C unit from HVAC Direct when I retire in 3 years.

Update: the 3 wks was up on 12/26...
Dad called them yesterday morning ( Fri 12/27)
To see if they had received the part they're waiting on yet .." no...but maybe I should call the distributor to see what the hold up is.. I'll call you back"
An hour later they call him back, "they're shipping it out today, we should have it on Monday, we'll be out 8 am on Tuesday ( 12/31 ).
So... fingers crossed we'll have a working furnace for the new year...

This is just me, I'm no longer "shy" about double-checking things, car repair, any repair. I'd ask to see the part they're installing, and the one that comes out (I may even ask to keep the old part but maybe there's a core who knows), and take pics of them. Due to the ECM vs. PSC motors. I saw a YouTube where the channel had no shame in installing a PSC when an ECM came out. He said the homeowner will never even know the difference and this was the part that was available the soonest. Again the no heat bothers me (I can only imagine you) so hope you're back to normal in a couple of days!

So they've left a customer that has a service contract with them without heat for 3 weeks in the middle of winter...sounds like a great outfit.

Let's just say when I get my own place, I won't be calling them for anything..
Yes. I think the service man that was sent on the holiday callout was incompetent.
If it was a pressure switch, he should have been able to bypass it and get a temporary fix to get heat going.

I recently had issues with a 16 year Trane XV95.
I had the installers manual, and there were test procedures to follow.

After confirming 24 volt AC output from transformer, 120 AC to motor, and a couple other tests, I determined that the blower motor had failed.

I called the Trane dealer that installed the furnace, asking if I could purchase the factory direct replacement.
They still haven't contacted me after 2nd call in to let me know.
I replaced with a generic blower motor thats working, but it would have been easier to replace with a direct replacement.
I had to install an additional interface module to control the generic motor and wire it on to the furnace controls to match thermostat wiring.

Well, any other HVAC company is just as capable of fleecing you as this one.
You need to call several places, especially when they claim big $$$ repairs or say the entire system needs replacing.
A good HVAC technician is like a good, honest independent mechanic. When you find either, treat them like family since they are worth their weight in gold and hard to come by.

I doubt that a PSC is an easy drop-in hookup for an ECM. But even if it was, he did the home owner a favor.

It took one of them to answer my question, “If the $8 (2018) filter worked from 2002 until this year, how come it won’t anymore?”

Furnace was short cycling.

He said the blower is like an old man. It no longer has the ability to blow like it did when new. Rather than pay to replace now I can move the jumpers. He increased the fan speed and told me to use $0.99 filters and change frequently, maybe 3 weeks. This was to get by.

To prove it, he measured and showed me the output temp as is, then with filter removed.

He also told me when I called him to clean the a coil, what makes you think the a coil needs cleaning (AC beginning to fail and internet knows best). He said if you’ve not run without a filter your a coil is not dirty. Flash forward to 2020 when furnace ripped out. He was right. A coil was clean as a whistle, maybe cleaner.

Ask a chain hvac and they’ll likely say nothing lasts forever and here’s a $20k solution.

I suppose it’s getting harder and harder to get free advice. But as mentioned I think it was this year, plumber tightened the packing nut to stop a drip and charged $0, formally. Got an emailed invoice for $0, so it was on the books.

looks like the main board needs to be replaced, and that's a $500 part, BUT... this system is 13 years old, and it only has a 15 year design life
You either need to step up and be firmer with "helping" your parents when it comes to things like this or stay out of it. I can tell you this, our ~20 year old furnace (original to the house) had the main board get burned up. Our HVAC guy's first step was call the supply house about a replacement part. He spoke to them, then spoke to me and said "I've got good news and bad news. Good news is the board is available, bad news is it's $600." I asked him jokingly, "how much is a new furnace?", he gave me a ballpark #, and I said please order the part. He's done a few other repairs over the years, checks the refrigerant level, etc and has even bought a part for me to replace myself.

Which capacitors are these ?

👍🏻 I like to think we've got a good one. I recommend him all the time to others too.

Let There be Heat!
new Furnace installed as of about 2 hours ago.
old A/C hauled away, new one not installed yet...we'll see how long THAT takes...
all the inside bits are installed, just not the outside bits... if you get what i'm saying. ( can't think of the right part names)

and they installed the new A/C today. Just in time for a snow storm!
with the time they took to get the furnace in ( a month) , I was afraid that they'd drag out the A/C install until spring, and we'd be a month or so into A/C weather before they came out.
