MIL's 06 Sonata V6 3.3 needs some syn.

that "freakin'" hyundai is one of the best cars on the road. It is also the most reliable car on the road in 2004,2005 and 2006.

The Sonata garnered "Initial Quality" awards from J.D. Powers & Associates for those model years (you forgot the 2003 model year, by the way) - which only assesses how nicely everything seemed to be screwed together and how well the dealer prepped the car at delivery. That's by no means a reliability measure. As to the reliability of Hyundai's new lambda V6 engines, it's a little premature to declare them the winner of the "millinneum of engine design" award at this point. There may be some nearing or at 30,000 miles, but doubtful enough to make a call, yet. Enjoy your new car.

Ray...just came across this post. what's your deal? To some of us, the Hyundai is a darn nice car. I've got a VW, a Nissan Murano, and my 07 Sonata, and I'll tell you...The Sonata is right up there with some of the best cars I have owned. So, maybe it is a freaking Hyundai, but that's no reason an owner shouldn't care about it. Also not a reason to not use synthetic....

Sometimes I wonder about people..

I have the same engine 3.3 liter engine made in Montgomery Alabama in a 2007 Santa Fe and changed the factory fill and filter at 4000 miles. Used Motorcraft semi synthetic 5W20. Will run it for about 4000 miles before the next change and use some of the stash of Havoline 5W20 Synthetic that I bought at Big Lots on sale.

If if were not for the sale at Big Lots, would have continued using Motorcraft 5W20.

Tell ya what....11k miles of ownership, and the car is great. Lexus quiet, quick, and roomy. I now wish I had moved up to the Azera! Running it on GTX, but will definitely be moving to Amsoil some time soon!

On a side note. I'm an ISO 9001:2000 and AS9100B auditor. It is uncommon for the companies on the top of the supply chain to be ISO certified although they require their prime suppliers to be. Ford, GM, Boeing, and Lockheed are not ISO certified.

It was very interesting to see the add in the Motor Trend magazine that came in today's mail that the US Hyundai plant is ISO/TS 16949 Certified. The add says that it is the only automotive assembly plant in the world to receive this certification.

ISO/TS 16949 is the standard that is specifically focused to the automotive industry, just as AS9100B is focused on the Aerospace industry. Both the AS9100B standard and the ISO/TS 16949 standard are based on the ISO 9001:2000 standard but with additional clauses added where the specific industry feels additional focus is needed.

This should be a wake up call that the Korean automakers have got their act together.

My junior @ The University school of journalism has a Sonota 3.3 that I maintain. He works full time and pays his own way though the U of Oregon. Last OC we went with Valvoline Synpower 5W-20. This stuff is great for cleanliness. But next OC will be Mobil-1 EP 5w30 which is the best true syn you can get for the money (compare the #'s). $ 5.90 Qt last time @ ChinaMart. The 3.3 makes decent power and hauls #@$%!! Nice exhaust note too! Try this oil.

Any manufacturer can produce a dud. A co-worker had a shiny red 2004 Hyundai Tiburon. Slick-looking boy-racer car. Total pile though... It was in for warranty work more than it wasn't. I couldn't believe the things that had to be replaced on that car. All of these before 24k miles, when he was finally able to dump it: clutch, throwout bearing, driver side power window motor (3x), power lock something (they kept quitting), rear hatch (kept leaking), steering wheel (leather wore off), BOTH interior door panels (wore and came loose), and probably some other things. He hated that car more than anything else.

He's back into a Ford now... It'll be the last Hyundai he ever owns. But another co-worker has a Santa Fe. He says it's reliable, and I guess it is. There are a lot of rattles in it, but he did buy it used, so you never know where it came from...
