Microsoft gathering EVERYTHING( Windows10 )

I am not some conspiracy fanatic here. Take a moment and go read about all the info that is now being sent to Microsoft and shared about you. Everything from personal data( sites visited, credit card numbers, pass words, etc... ), to key stroke logging( yes they are even tracking what you type ), to even allowing transfer of info from your built in camera, voice programs, etc... Literally just about EVERYTHING. WiFi sense basically leaves your WiFi open to anyone. They are tracking and collecting data about you from every single thing you do on the computer and it is all being sent to Microsoft.

How I use my computer and what I do with it is none of their business. You know as well as I do that all that info they gather is going to be sold all over the place. I don't use my computer for illegal things but it is still no one's business what I do with it and they certainly do not need my passwords and such.

Take a moment, if you have access to a Windows 10 system, to go to the Settings>Privacy area like I said and just look at the amount of things that are enabled allowing your info to be sent to/shared with Microsoft. If it doesn't alarm you something is wrong with you, not me.

Just go to the PC Settings section and open up the two specific areas I mention in my 1st post and you will be able to see all the things that are turned on that share info. Each one actually describes what it does so just go through them all and turn off or leave on as desired.

I don't use this p.c. for anything except surfing the net and a few forums because it is an open book for i.d. theft, fraud, and anything else even sneaky wives, lol . Anyone with a little time and a few crafty programs can do the same thing nothing is private online don't kid yourself.


I understand that using the internet puts you at some risk but this is different. Microsoft has designed Windows 10 to basically be one big data mining operation and send them all the info. It is an outrageous intrusion IMO. Our own computers are stealing our identities and sending them off to Microsoft.

NO wonder they offered Windows 10 for free. They are going to make 10X's what they would have made selling the OS by selling our info Windows 10 steals and sends them instead.

Tinfoil hat on nice and snug. I am hiding my credit card numbers, bank account number, SS#, statements... and anything else that can allow some punk to steal my identity.

BTW, I watched illegals(the cleaning crew) sort thru company non-shredded HR garbage and steal multiple colleague identities. The company now wears a tinfoil hat and shreds EVERYTHING. All work computers auto log out, passwords changed every 90 days, AV auto-update and scans daily(overnight), more snug firewall, more serious look and OS updates and security flaws, and employees are better trained in privacy of all for protection. Nothing like battling the bank/lenders, and the city and state income tax offices, and the IRS for back taxes because you worked 15 full time jobs that year without paying taxes, had 50 credit cards maxed out, and multiple loans...

I've blocked the Windows 10 updates and the data collections for smoother transition when upgrading. Will give it a year to see how bad 10 really is. Already am competent with non-MS OS's. Time to move away from MS Windows. And, no fan of the apple fruit either.





I am moving in that direction as well. Cheaper and I just don't do much (other than netflix) that requires Windows.

So post all your calls and texts here so we can look them over!

The problem isn't really being spied on today. If you're an activist/journalist/whatever doing illegal or controversial work obviously you know to be careful with your electronic usage. It's the fact that they can use the info collected today years down the road when you have no idea of the political landscape. Think Mozilla CEO.

I don't consider myself a tinfoil hat guy, but I am onside with you on the privacy matter. Who knows what else they're gathering, even when you turn various things off. The stuff isn't open source, and internet connections aren't as simple as they used to be, where you could look at your dialup modem and watch something being sent when you weren't browsing and know something was up.

I will continue to use Linux for anything I possibly can. Modern Windows does has some pretty nifty bells and whistles, but they really don't speed up my work or my fun, so there's not a lot of point.

I even noticed that the PC gaming world isn't what it used to be. The games that they really push for PCs are available on Xbox or PS4. I preferred when there were some real hardcore simulations on Windows, stuff you'd never find on a console. I don't want duplication of console gaming.
 
When you installed 10, you had all of the privacy options presented to select/deselect. It is not like these privacy settings mysteriously compromised your system without your knowledge.
 
I think most of those things can be turned off when setting up Windows for the first time, if you choose use "Express" settings then it will have everything enabled. It was the same in Windows 8 and 8.1

I consider myself more "tech savy" and i NEVER use quick install or default settings install when installing ANYTHING because often they have bloatware, unnecessary software, tooldbars or settings enabled that i dont like.

Surely, it's all about money in the first place... and certainly not our money. The truth about Windows 10 spying on almost everything you do is a major discussion in lots of tech blogs on the Internet, including Emsisoft blog. I find it really helpful, and they also offer their anti-spyware and anti-malware tool, which is just marvellous. It comes in both free and paid version, and the best thing is that I've never used such an innovative, minimalistic and unobtrusive software that doesn't slow my PC.

That is true ONLY if you do a CUSTOM install. If you do a standard install, as I have done to this point, everything is enabled. I had no idea the scope of the privacy invasion involved or I would have done a custom install or I would have immediately gone and shut that [censored] off after a standard install.

I almost never use the express or standard install regardless of what I am installing either, but rather, I use the custom one for the reason you say = it let's you see what is being installed so you can choose not to add certain features( or other add-on's ). However, my installations of Windows 10 have been experiments with older machines for the most part( one Windows 7 upgrade = rest have been over Vista )and I was concentrating more on seeing if I could even get it to work( Vista )than worrying about this stuff.

In future installs I will select custom install. For those who did not do that, for whatever reason, when installing Windows 10 this thread hopefully will help them fix the install they have.

That was my experience with getting Windows 8.1 or whatever it is I was using into the position where I could burn a Linux Mint image. What a bunch of pre-checked nonsense.

Very True! I thought you were aware of this? I remember one of the guides you pointed me to suggested 'custom' to turn off about 10 of these privacy switches. Taking the "express install" option will by default enable all of this.

Yep...it IS quite a privacy invasion. Evidently this was begun with W8 unfortunately.

I'm wondering how much will be auto re-enabled after a short delay?

This is why I installed it on a back-up LT. To read up on it first, rather than jump in head-first into murky waters.

I skipped over the author's "thoughts" in the links and focused only on the specifics of how to do the install. I would have done the custom if I realized the extent to which Microsoft is gathering info. It is one of those things where you know something is bad but had no idea how bad until you actually look at it yourself.
