I have news for you!
"A 300 Treadwear rating" means that the tire lasted at least 3x the reference tire.
It may have been exact 3 or it could have been 3.5 or 5. Depending on how the tire manufacturer wanted to "position" the tire in their lineup. It is illegal to overstate UTQG but nothing prevents manufacturer to understate it. Just to make it look more sporty, for example.

My 2005 Subaru Legacy GT had mediocore Bridgestone Potenza RE92 with 140 treadware rating (as far as I remember) that lasted into 40K. They were not as high performance as their treadware rating would make you believe.

I've had W-rated Kumho ECSTA Platinum LX tires before. They were geared towards touring than performance.

Michelin also made the Primacy HP summer tires, originally an optional tire on the Prius, 240 A A, W-speed rated. Not exactly a performance car that needed performance tires.

The Chief Engineer tuned the BRZ suspension around the lower grip limits of the Primacy HP tires, which they could have went with Pilot Sports instead... A real performance tire.

No, not recently. Years ago. And that was only because Michelin didn't make the size my son's MR2 needed.
If I were to ever have another car that I couldn't buy Michelins for, I would use Mastercrafts.
