MG HS

Checked the oil level yesterday. I keep forgetting to check until after I started so this time I made a conscious effort.

Oil level is where I left it, and I didn't smell fuel. I really can't ask for more, the oil is in there for 5k miles now without adding any.

2 new phenomenom I've observed over the last few weeks.

First, the downshift points for the transmission have moved. The transmission hangs on to a higher gear longer now for example it would drop out of 7th gear at 63 kph before, but now hangs on to 56 ish kph (on level ground). A similar thing is happening in other gears. Downshifts seem to be load driven.

Second, and I believe it's linked to the first, the fuel consumption has dropped slightly. This could of course on it's own be explained by different fuel composition and I would attribute it to that if not for the transmission thing. It's a small decrease, but it should have gone the other way as it's definitely the colder as it's ever been since I have this car.

I'm guessing the engine is getting less tight, part of the running in process. With my previous diesel this happened aswell but it took 60,000 miles, now only 6000.

There a a lot of Malibu’s and Equinox with 1.5T with over 150000 miles or 240000 kilometers in the USA and Canada. Go to there forums

6000 miles rolled over. Nothing exciting to mention except the dct shifts have improved over time, Now they are truly unnoticeable, crisp but never harsh. I wonder how much is due to breaking in, and how much due to adaptation. This was a gradual process, didn't just happen overnight. I don't prefer the Giulietta shifts anymore, like I used to. They are on par now.

6000miles in 13 months? Those are rookie numbers Jet! :ROFLMAO:

Glad you’re having better luck than we did with our ZS. My Mothers ‘21 MG3 has been pretty much perfect since she’s had it too.

Finally we get consistently freezing weather, and snow.

Although the tyres on the HS are officialy summer tyres, they do work surprisingly well on snow and ice, hadn't had any slips yet. I see a lot of other cars on summer tyres having issues though. winter and all season tyres are rare, last winter we didn't get snow (there might have been 1 morning with a light dusting).

The temperatures creep up above freezing during the day, but go back below at night, so any snow starts melting than freezes over again. We also get a lot of fog, which then also freezes.

Too bad these tyres are almost impossible to get, I really like them. Never would have thought that. They're Maxxis Bravo HPM 5. The tread pattern looks more 3-season to me than it does summer. I got the 17" wheels, the 18" wheels come with Michelin primacy tyres, and those are apparently lacking in grip.

Filled the tank and again the consumption dropped, as did the very consistent error of fuel cundumption reported by the on board computer. I'm having consumption figures now consistent with what I got in october, yet we still have freezing weather regularly.

the on board computer is now about 1% off were it used to be about 5%.

Consumption keeps dropping. I'm now at the consumption level I got last summer, yet it's still freezing at night.

Also found out the trip computer underreads distance by about 1%. Was doing a 100+ mile highway drive a,d the trip computer was falling behind the GPS distance. So that means the fuel consumption is actually even better than I calculated.

My guess is the Maxxis tyres area bit bigger than their size suggests, it also explains why the speedo is so accurate, almost dead on.

Took advantage of the warm weather and did a drain and fill on the gearbox. Double Dry Clutch Transmission so takes regular MT oil. I put in the Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 I had leftover. The transmission takes 2.5 litres.

That Castrol is high on Ester content, I've used it for years before when I wrenched for a living. It always enabled good shift quality, and is very thin at -40° though has a nice viscosity when hot.

I might take a fuel consumption hit, in theory I would as the fluid that drained out was much thinner. Time will tell.

The normal drain interval is 90,000 km or 6 years, so worst (or best) case this oil will stay in for 5 years, 77,000 km.

heres a YT video with an oil analysis. BTW the oil looks like red wine in a clear container, though when pouring it has a more typical golden brown colour.

Decided to chack the oil level again, it's been a few months. Still where I left it since the oil fill at 1000 miles. I got 8000 miles on the car now.

I always chack the oil when cold and when parked in front of the house, but since I often leave before sunrise I can't or don't feel like or even think about checking the oil.

No real fuel smell either, that's always good.

Interesting thread, thanks. I like the looks of your MG much more than the Chevrolets that run this engine.

Just had a look at the Buick Envision, and it's essentially the same body and suspension as this car, but 1.5T engine like an equinox. It's a $30k car over here, not $45k.

It's not a big seller in the US, but would love to hear/read peoples experiences. Especially how the suspension holds up.

The Buick Envision and MG HS do not share platforms or bodies. They’re totally different cars.
