MG HS

Things to do this summer:

1 early oil change, probably around the 1000 km mark.
1 early dct oil change, at the end of summer
reducing the coolant concentratrion to about 35%

The OCI for this vehicle is 15,000 km or 1 year, whichever comes first. I'll do an early change soon, and a 2nd around 7000 km/6 months. It'll get it's annual change at a dealer.

the dct interval is 90,000 km or 6 years, I'll do an early change soon to get any possible break-in swarf out.

Removing 1l of coolant from the header tank and replacing with demineralised water will get me near to 35% coolant concentration. I will replace 1 litre every year and replace with a premix at 35% after that. OAT coolant is what it takes, like the VW pink stuff (same as the Alfa). It doesn't get very cold here, -21°C is the coldest I have seen in my lifetime.

Tried the adaptive cruise today for the first time.

It seems to work well, when the cars in front stopped for a red light, so did mine all by itself. It changes the shift behaviour for the gearbox, running lower RPM than I can do. I need to drive 76 kph to get it to shift to top gear (I can slow down below 76 and stay in top gear though), but on cruise it happily shifts to top gear at 63 kph.

I aimed the headlight properly, and I'm still happy with them, the beam is wide, so I can see what's lurking on the shoulders, less illumination directly in front of the car (but not dark) and more towards the end of the throw. Cut-off is not too sharp so the lights don't appear to be dancing around when the car tilts on bad roads

Also, the battery charging voltage as displayed on the dash sems to not go below 13.8V. Typically it sits at 13.8-13.9V. I hope that's true, I'd rather have the battery kept topped up than at 80% like most if not all battery management systems do. But I need to investigate further, especially right after start up.

Low fuel light came on for the first time, so I got fuel 45.4l and can now calculate the real average for the first tank. turns out there's 10l left in the tank when the fuel light comes on. 45.4l for 715 km. The ODO said 727 but 11 km on it before delivery and 1 km or so to the fuel station.

Trip computer said 6.3l/100 km which works out to 37 mpg (us)
Manual calculation says 6.34l/100 km or pretty much on the nose 37mpg.

That's 15% better than WLTP average, sure can't complain about that. Fuel consumption dropped after the first 100 miles or so. I expect better for the next tank unless it gets crazy hot or stupid cold suddenly.

Decided to get 1 more tank of premium, as the lower grades tend to not contain PEA. I'm going to look at adding it myself as it will work out cheaper.

I don't hear the engine pinging when taking off, like a lot of them do these days. That's a good sign.

Going to change the oil this weekend, so now is the time to start putting some revs and boost on it. Drove home in sport mode (typically 2 gears lower than standard mode), pulled up to 90 mph where I could. Engine revs to 6.1k rpm in sport mode with kickdown, 5.9k in standard mode, before switching up a gear.

still did 28 mpg though.

And the oil has been changed. Put 10W-30 full synth in it, and just because I drove to work. I got better mileage than I expected, saturday traffic is always heavier than my usual commute early in the morning or late in the evening. I almost made my most economic run ever, and have a feeling next week sometime I will.

VVT didn't complain either.

Next oil change will be at the 5k miles mark and a deler change every 10k, with me doing an interim change.

No undertray, and high enough off the ground that I don't need to jack the car up, easiest oil change in my life. The drain plug was little more than finger tight, 15mm hex head btw.

Picked up some STP ful system cleaner, to add to the cheaper E10 fuel, rather than pay for premium E5 fuel with a minimal amount of PEA detergent. works out to about 1 euro per fill, while the cheaper fuel is over 10 euro less per tank.

second tank of fuel finished today. Still returned 38.5mpg and I drove it harder, especially the days before the oil change.

Yesterday the trip computer reported 50 MPG when I arrived at work, and today 49 MPG. Both are better than I ever did in this vehicle, previous record was 47 MPG.

The wonderful world of Battery Management Systems....

Adaptive charging kicked in today. While I was waiting on the wife, (see: husbands of target), I was listening to some tunes and switched to the battery charging screen. 12.5V with ignition on and engine not running. As to be expected...

But when we pulled out of the parking lot, the charging voltage was still 12.5V, and it usually sits at 13.8V. So I let of the gas and BAM, 14.4V. It kept doing this all the way home: coasting and braking I got 14.4-14.5V, and while burning fuel or sitting at the lights 12.5-12.8V. Turning off automatic stop-start didn't make any difference in the behaviour.

MG HS and EHS is the biggest MG on offer where I live, it's roughly the size of a Hyundai tucson.

It's also the cheapest on offer in it's calss.

I've seen one article about it, what stood out to me is they commented how well it soaked up speed bumps (the ICE only version: HS) and rough roads. As I get older, I find this more and more important for a family vehicle....

Apparently the engine is a GM 1.5 turbo, and the transmissions available are a 6 speed manual or 7 speed DCT. I don't know who supplies the transmissions, but unless there are major concerns with the DCT I'd want that.

The plug-in version comes with a 10-speed automatic, but costs mlore and I can't plug-in anyways.

5 star euro ncap rating, so not terrible for safety either.

Is the GM engine any good, and does GM offer that 7 speed DCT (sportronic) aswell or anyone have any clue who supplies it?

Around 30,000 euro with all bells and whistles, 7 year warranty. A Tucson would cost 40k.
Bunch of acronyms there. could not help to laugh. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Found out how the battery management system works...

If the hvac is off when the car is started, BMS works, with no charging while dring or acellerating, and full charging on coasting or braking. Turn on hvac or the lights and I get a constant 13.8/13.9v. If hvac was on when starting, constant 13.8v aswell.

I guess it's only there for the fuel consumption tests but not intended to be used all the time, or at all even...

No matter what I do, I can't get the fuel consumption above the WLTP rating, I'm typically 15% or more below it except for the very first miles. I don't know how the chinese managed to get such a bad result

Another tank spent. 6.0 l/100 km reported by the car, 6.32 byl/100 km by manual calculation. The last tank was likely actualy E5 though, while the Shell used before reportedly doesn't contain ethanol. Still, 4-ish% higher consumption, 7% less cost per litre.

I will try E10 soon.

Last friday it was only 11°C when I left for work. Turns out there's an electric heater in the hvac, so got immediate heat and demisting. Took a lot of time and miles to get the engine up to temp though.

2500 km on there now. I did an oil change after about 1000 km, so far the oil level stays where I put it. I can very faintly smell fuel but i have to put the dipstick just about up my nose to detect it. so far so good! Going to Germany this weekend, so might try a top speed run on the autobahn.

Back from Germany. Put nearly 900 miles on the car. lots of hill climbing, 18% was the steepest thgat was indicated, over a 3 mile stretch.

All went weel, I used sports mode especially to go down, to keep revs and engine braking up as much as possible. That's one situation it would be beneficial to select gears manually, which I can't. No issues with the handling either. Soft roaded to the top of a hill, just FWD and packed dirt but no wheel slippage. At a guess, 15-20% gradient in places.

Worst mileage so far, but not unexpected. 34.5 mpg. Still around 15% better than official figures. So far the last tank is doing great, but I live at about 200ft high, and was around 1500 ft up when I got gas. up to 3000ft high in th black forest.

oh, no oil consumption detected, no fuel smells or otherwise stinky oil like you get when it's due. I figured the 3k+ rpm going down hill with closed throttle would make a lot of vacuum and possibly consumption of oil.

Got some ARAL Ultimate 102RON fuel while I was there, same cost as 98 RON locally.

And the inside of the tail pipe is still clean, should be as the engine has a gpf.

Filled it with 95 E10 for the first time. Let's see if I take a fuel consumption hit compared to 98 E5. What is certain, the 95 E10 doesn't contain the detergent and friction modifier additives that stuff Like Shell Vpower does. I used Shell Fuelsave, it's the station closed to home.

Checked the oil level again, didn't budge. Got 4500 km on it now. No oil leaks or sweats. no fuel smell on the dipstick.

First tank of E10 is finished. Can't say I notice an increase in consumption. 37.51 mpg, but we also had a few nights were temps dropped closer to freezing, and it took noticeably longer for the engine to get up to temp.

37.88 mpg on the previous 100RON E5 fuel, so that's not statistically different. But to be fair, there could have been up to 20% premium 100 RON fuel left in the last tank.

On E10, my fuel cost works out to around $0.15 per mile, that's not too bad at European fuel prices.
