MG HS

They're called PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) over here. You pay what is essentially the depreciation only plus interest with the option to hand back or purchase outright at the end of the plan.

My concern with this is, what with stone chips or scratches in the paint, curb damage etc....

They have guidelines as to what is considered general wear and tear vs damage. It's actually quite surprising exactly what is considered wear and tear.
Ally/GMAC would always mail the wear square nearing the end of the SmartBuy/Lease

Order placed on friday. Getting one fresh from China as the combo I wanted didn't exist. 2-3 months wait I guess.

I wanted the barest one (which is still pretty well equipped) with an automatic (dct). Stuff it doesn't have: glass roof, electric boot lifts, big alloys, electric adjustment on passenger seat, led headlights, "dynamic" tail lights, lights in the dash and door cards.

But it does have the same HVAC, same radio/screens and speakers, heated seats, same engine and same transmission and still on 17" alloys which is plenty big for me. The stuff listed in the previous paragraph sounds to me like it's an expense waiting to happen after the 7 year warranty runs out. I intend to run this car alongside the Alfa Romeo until the wheels fall off both. I might not be able to get a new ICE before long, and extra nannies are on the horizon, like speed limiter and an Event Data Recorder. This one likely will have that already but the Alfa doesn't.

MG HS and EHS is the biggest MG on offer where I live, it's roughly the size of a Hyundai tucson.

It's also the cheapest on offer in it's calss.

I've seen one article about it, what stood out to me is they commented how well it soaked up speed bumps (the ICE only version: HS) and rough roads. As I get older, I find this more and more important for a family vehicle....

Apparently the engine is a GM 1.5 turbo, and the transmissions available are a 6 speed manual or 7 speed DCT. I don't know who supplies the transmissions, but unless there are major concerns with the DCT I'd want that.

The plug-in version comes with a 10-speed automatic, but costs mlore and I can't plug-in anyways.

5 star euro ncap rating, so not terrible for safety either.

Is the GM engine any good, and does GM offer that 7 speed DCT (sportronic) aswell or anyone have any clue who supplies it?

Around 30,000 euro with all bells and whistles, 7 year warranty. A Tucson would cost 40k.
The transmission is most likely ZF. Is it similar to the 8 speed dct in the C8 Corvette?

No it's a SAGW DCT 280. 7 speed wet dual clutch transmission. Made by Shanghai automobile gear works. I've been looking but no horror stories about this transmission
Interesting. I'm kind of surprised that it offers a manual transmission option. With automatic transmissions seeing better fuel economy than manuals over the last few years. It's a bummer that it isn't made in the UK.

Took delivery today.

The intial mileage on the way home (I filled it up with euro 98 for the first tank) was about 30 MPG (after about 5 miles, the engine was up to temp in less than a mile) but it quickly improved and after about another ten miles I got about 40 mpg, just keeping up with traffic.

The first gear is shorter than usual but not a true crawl gear.

Engine noise is low, near to the point of not hearing it at all in the car, definitely with the radio on in the background.

There's a lot of beeping going on though, especially from the mandatory speed limiter. It just warns me I'm over the limit, it doesn't actaully limit anything. But it's wrong 50% of the time, and always to the low side.

The ride is comfortable, suspension is soft but the car still reacts quickly to steering inputs (with some roll and a direction change). I prefer a bit more straight line stability, I will adjust caster and camber up front to get it.

The dct is smooth, I can't feel the changes except you feel the drop in wheel torque when you go up a gear (especially in the lower gears).

Seating position is okay, quite like in my Alfa Romeo. The dash gauges seem to be copied from BMW, the HVAC vents near the doors come almost straight out of a mercedes.

I didn't try to push it to the limit yet, not with the handling or with the brakes and engine.

Going to check the oil level in a minute...

Forgot to add, I wanted the poverty spec, so expected Halogen (HB3) headlights, but it has LED headlights.

I don't know if this one comes with different driving modes, it doesn't have the sport button on the steering wheel or flippers behind it. I have used the flippers on my Giulietta maybe 5 times since 2013, so not worried about that, And I don't seem to need any sports mode either. While cruising rpms are low, but when accelerating gently, they go up to 2k, and going uphill (8% or so I tried today) the gearbox waits at 2.5k to shift down when reaching the summit. I like it, not lugging the engine...

The LEd lights are ok. I need to adjust the aim properly though, for now I turned them down from inside the car.

The lighting on the direct foreground is less than further up the road, this is how I like it, much less blinding to myself.

Although I have only a little over 100 miles on it now, the fuel consumption keeps improving. I'm expecting mid-40s soon.

I found the sports mode, the transmission sticks to 2 gears lower than in normal mode, have only used it for a few miles.

The speedo is very accurate, 1mph over the true speed. I'm used to bigger differences, so need to stick closer to the posted limits....

Glad you're enjoying it and hope you have more luck than we have with our ZS.

Get some pictures up!

I do wonder how easy that 1.5TGDi would go into our ZS ultimately it's from the same family of engines that our 1.5DVVT is from. That said there's ample room in our engine bay to turbocharge the 1.5DVVT if we wanted to in the future. A few pounds of boost between 2-3k would make such a difference to the way it drives.

I did around 200 miles in the Wife's ZS yesterday and got 51mpg. My Wife's long term average is 32mpg. I don't know what she's doing to the bloody thing, especially as it's often on the M4 back and fore Swindon.

just broke 47 mpg (us) on our trip to the shops (about 13 miles). Traffic was flowing but busy enough so there's no overtaking. On the way back I used a slightly different route with more stop n go lights, and you guessed it I caught every red one. 44 mpg on the way back. Stop/start kicked in on the first light, I switched it off after that.

In the UK that would be 56 and 52 MPG.

I really can't complain about that, it's only got 130 miles on it and it's pure ICE, no hybrid.

My wife had her pic taken with it, I'll see if I can get it up here.

I also succeeded in silencing all the beeps and the "you are driving too fast" woman, so it's all good now

driving it like she stole it would be my guess. I know my mum was quite the race driver when I was a kid, hub caps flying off in corners etc....

I always thought you lived in the UK! The shutters took me by surprise for a second, I was trying to think where on warm in the UK you’d need shutters for protection. :ROFLMAO:

That's the north wall of the house we parked in front of, so the sun was squarely in the west. I suppose the neighbours weren't home and left the shutters down.

An attractive car in a generic Toyota/Nissan/Lexus sort of way. Not bad at all.
Seeing the Sacred Octagon on a Chinese machine seems a bit jarring, but then so was the last Honda MG.
From your driving impressions, the car seems a good driver and fuel economy seems very good.
I hope it serves you (and wife) well for many happy miles.

well you can read all about it here.... spoiler alert, oil change coming up in the next few weeks.

Some things could be improved, obviously. The rado plays louder than the USB for example, that's annoying when a traffic anouncement comes blasting through.
