Did a search on this, but couldn't get any definite answers.
Is this a "step up" from Dexron III/Mercon, and this fluid can be used in trannys calling for Dexron/Mercon? I was under the impression that Mercon and Mercon V were completely different fluids and were not interchageable.

Well,that sort of depends.For example,Fords 4R70W transmissions built from 98 to present require MerconV.The AOD,which is a 4R70W,and the 97 4R70W require Mercon/Dexron III,but Ford says you can use MerconV in these transmissions to cure the shudder problem they have.Also,Ford has the E4OD transmission,which you can only use Mercon fluid in it.Using MerconV will ruin it.

Same with the 4R100, I believe...

This whole "dual-rated" ATF thing is frustrating and confusing.

1. You can't use Mercon V in transmission "X", or it will be ruined...you must use Mercon only.
2. Durablend ATF is rated as both Mercon V AND Mercon.
3. How can ONE fluid be rated as both acceptable AND unacceptable for the same transmission?

All Ford Trucks with the following transmissions use specific fluid for the Warranty:

E40D=Mercon/DexronIII (no dual rated fluid)

4R100=Mercon/DexronIII (no dual rated fluid)

5R100=Mercon SP ($5.16 to $20 per quart depending on Dealer)

Warranty on these transmissions are 36K/36 months with an additional 64K/24 months with a $100 deductable.

If you have a transmission related failure and you don't comply, you may just BUY your own replacement. JMO

Mobil I, and Royal Purple meet these specs for synthetic use in the E40D and 4R100. The Mercon SP for the 5R100 is hard to find and this trans has been in production since sometime in 2003.

Conoco.

When this fluid was brand new, our Motorcraft supplier told us that if we needed some it could only be ordered in drums and that they were in stock at Conoco until other packaging was available.

Easy to find Mercon SP...the dealer and only the dealer.
