Media inspection at home

I taped a piece of oil filter media to an led flashlight. It’s easy to see sparkles of light here and there by eye, and more is shown by moving side to side as not all holes are straight through. I was unable to get pictures of the sparkles from holes but they are there, small and bright. Toyota N1 media, which seems very nice just looking at it normally. A way to judge differences by eye imo. I have a microscope too, which shows a small area. Press it on a piece of media. It can look good, or not good. Picture is of microscope only, media taken by ipad camera. Microscope shows media very well, how it’s woven, light spots, and has a scale. Light spots seen are about .001” or smaller. But it’s 60x so a tiny area.

They sell very cheap microscopes now for inspecting coins and things. I have some good microscopes of all types. Zeiss, Leitz, Wild, etc. The area of view like wcw shows could be one particlar small spot. Like I said, moving the eye like scanning reveals more information, as it’s looking from an angle as well as perpendicular. More voids appear. I bet they make close up lenses for pads and phones.

I think WCW does x100 zoom so that would be the start for us to be able to create a "Standard" to compare with others he's posted. 10 for effort.

100x is too much imo. Not seeing more voids, just less area. You would have to move the sample around more, or assume that small area represents the whole filter, which it doesn’t.

I saw some microscopes from Carson on Amazon. I got two, one a 20x and another 60-120x. Both have iPhone clips. One $19 and the other $16. Microbrite. I suspect wcw uses something like this.

Places I worked had electron microscopes, scanning acoustic microscopes, etc. Those aren’t needed to look at oil filters light spots.
I am neither a hostile person, or a condescending one. In fact I am the total opposite. Texts like these are often misunderstood. I misunderstand others also, so people can just lighten up.
When I said I have Zeiss, Leitz, Wild, etc it’s a hobby, or was, like people tell what tools they own. There are many types of them. There is nothing in there about Im better than others.
I used the Peak simple cheap microscope I had laying in a box of junk, shown above, and an eye loupe to make a worst to best rating on some filters, 4 or 5. Very apparent differences. Don’t need anything fancy to do the test for light spots. Very clear differences. That’s all it’s about.

I returned the Carson ones from Amazon. They were good enough for this, but the mount for an iPhone or iPad wasn’t how I liked. All I need is a cracked screen. They also are made in China so I don’t want to buy more unless it’s a necessity. The purpose was to easily take pictures with the phone or pad without breaking the bank.
