Mazdaspeed 3 Oil Filter suggestions?

What would you guys suggest? I have 3 options right now

1. Motorcraft @ Walmart for $3.xx
2. WIX/NAPA @ Fleet Filter for $3.08 + shipping (plan to buy bulk to offset shipping charges)
3. Mazda OEM (not sure where I can purchase cheap OEM, but plan to buy bulk to offset shipping charges)

It seems like fleet filters and motorcraft is the way to go...I haven't been able to find any Mazda OEM websites for cheap oil filters...they usually range $6+ plus shipping...but anyway, which one would you guys recommend? I heard WIX/NAPA is great quality, but I am wondering why it's so cheap compared to other filters that I seen before? I don't know much about motorcraft quality...I kind of associate motorcraft with Ford...and we all know how ford is...haha j/k...but you get the point
 
the motorcraft ones are good quality.

People rave about the wix filters, I have personally never run one, have lots of pure one's but I would run a wix/napa with no worries.

fleet filter is a good place to go
 
I suspect that the mazda filter is just a rebadged Motorcraft (although that is just a guess) since ford and mazda are the same company and share product lines/engines. I would just stock up on the motorcraft as they are local, cheap, and well made.
 
motorcraft it is! I will run pennzoil yellow for a good while then switch out to pennzoil platinum! ftw!!
 
Motorcraft filters are only available at dealers, and are expennnnsive in Canada. Is there a consensus that the Wix/Napa option is the next best option in the Mazda application?

I can't keep track of what's available in Canada. If the cost of a NAPA/WIX filter is too high, you may check out a Baldwin. They have decent distribution in Canada. I dunno if fleetfilter has resolved their software to handle USPS to avoid the tariffs.

If I wasn't the first, I was one of the original people, who started hyping (on BITOG) Acklands-Grainger as the source for Baldwin filters in Alberta. Now I'm getting the advice back. A true example of what goes around, comes around.

P.S. I had already checked out Acklands and they don't have my filter in stock (and won't for many weeks), plus, the pricing for the equivalent NapaGold from Fleet Filter is about half the cost.

That is funny. I forget who I turned on to it once. They worked across the street from the outfit that sold them and didn't even know it. (which may well have been Acklands-Grainger).

Isn't there a difference between the two filters though? I thought there were some minor differences between the two.
 
there used to be. i have had both out of the box next to eachother and the updated mazda is identical to the ford, just in a white box. the mazda filter has the ford part number on it too.
 
We are talking about filter cartridges correct? My CX7 takes a cartridge and discovered that Mazda filters are now made by MotorCraft. The MC appear to be a quality filter. My Ford/Mazda dealer got $7.xx for the last one. After doing some research, I now buy WIX from Bumper-to-Bumper Auto for $3.xx which is the same as a NAPA GOLD. Do stay away from PureOne at present as reports are coming in on filter distortion. The standard Purolator filters are not affected and have a new center support.
 
From what I can tell, Mazda originally used a FRAM cartridge filter as the service part. I haven't bought any recently because no dealers are nearby, and aftermarket has come down in price. WIX and Purolator are nearly identical in design, and Motorcraft is a rebadged Purolator. Walmart charges $3.48 (I think) for the Motorcraft. They all work well.

Early Purolator designs (PureONE and Premium Plus) did exhibit some distortion (slight collapse) due to the spring pressure of the filter cap. The filter material would compress a little until it met the internal cage. At no time was filtration compromised. However, an additional plastic cage has been put in newer filters of the Purolator/WIX type to take up the space between the media and the filter cap's center cage. The Purolator/WIX is just slightly longer than the original Mazda/Fram design due to the different end caps.
 
Gotta reply to my own post. The WIX is not like the Purolator. I pulled it today during the oil change. Its more like the FRAM/OE type but with a rubber (instead of felt) gasket. Held up just fine without an internal plastic cage. Only had 3800 miles on the oil, but its been almost 6 months. The Motorcraft filter which has the felt ends was much easier to put on.
 
I don't know about the newer engines, but looking in parts fiche's, older Mazda filters are made by Tennex and Tokyo Roki ("A" at the end of part number).

Anyone know if this is true?

This is a cartridge insert filter like my Mazda CX7-correct? I have settled on the WIX/NAPA Gold cartridge. The WIX and original Mazda (Tokyo Roki) do not exhibit distortion when used. The newer MC and Purolator std & Pureone have distortion issues. While it is reported that the twisting distortion is only cosmetic, I prefere to remove my filters with the media not distorted. JMO. You may want to do a "filter dilemma" search on http://www.mazda247.com site where there is lots more information.
 
I agree, Eddie. Although it may make no functional difference, finding the spiral compression distortion upon removal isn't a comforting view. It tells you that the fit is not precise and will always cause some distress.
