Need to shut the water main from the utility inside the home to replace a outside water spicket. We have been in this home under one year, I have spent less than 30 nights in the home.

Searching all day, all I can come to the conclusion is the main water shut off valve is inside this pedestal. The pedestal appears to be built of plywood, and covered with drywall on the side. Access inside the pedestal from the top essentially requires removing the hot water heater.

Fascinating.....

Maybe drill a hole and place a borescope inside to see if its under there? I think there is no shut off under the pedestal as any sane builder should place an access panel, but based on my home ownership experienced most builders are pretty lazy or cutting corners.

Hey @GON, I'm not sure how they do things over there, but my shutoff is by my water meter, where's your water meter? Further, have you looked overhead, for a shutoff? The shut off for my outdoor spigot is hidden under the kitchen sink, I too had to replace the cartridge a couple of years ago.

There doesn't appear to be any pipes coming out of the pedestal so I would guess there is nothing in there. My shutoff is in the wall behind a bathroom vanity. I just use the water meter valve out at the street.

I'm not so sure it would be inside the pedestal, it appears the cold water supply line for your water heater is coming from behind it. Agreed with the others, look for your water meter. Maybe look for a wire connecting the meter to the remote reader.

Ditto everyone elses comment - where ever the water meter is is where the shutoff valve will be. For us being in Minnesota, that's indoors. Warmer states its often out at the street or other outdoor location...

I think the building code requires the inside water shut off to be readily accessible, so I doubt it is hidden in the enclosed pedestal. Logically, it would be located in close proximity to where the main supply line enters the house from the water meter.

Most municipalities that use R/F remote usage water meters have locking plastic lids on the underground meter box. To open them, you will need a Curb Box Wrench.

It shouldn't be there as if there was an emergency that would be really difficult to get to.

What kind of construction?

Mine is hanging off the basement wall 6" after the water meter.

where is your water meter? Look for your water meter?

The street cover has a lock and needs a key to remove. I will be buying one of the cover keys.

Town came out and turned off the water. The tool the use to turn off the water was about a six foot long t handle.

The town was really good about coming out and shutting off the water, and then returned to turn the water back on.

Water meter is in the street, electronic and I suspect sends usage for billing in a wireless system.

In addition to the curb box key, you will want to pick up one of these T-handle shut off tools at you local Home Depot's plumbing section.

knowing where the shut off is is very important . every rental house i worked in i told the tenant where the shut off is . best to know where it is now instead of when the water is gushing out .

Depending on the year of your home it may or may not have a shut off. i would say anything built after 1980 should have on inside the house . most common is inside closets and garages . you can sometime look up your house in planning dept and tehy may have how the direction that your main goes from meter to and where it enters the house .

if its a slab its usually in one of the corners . find your meter and look in the corner
