Manufacturer engine stress tests

Many of the details are closely guarded secrets. Some are not revealed at all. Ford has become a smart marketer to publicize these details, but almost everyone does similar torture testing.

Just as Overkill mentioned, this type of lab work may not be relevant to real world usage at all...
 
I'll leave the wife to torture her Ford.
I've seen her start it, go chat with a neighbor for half hour while idle, to start it and drop in gear in a nano-second and on the gas pedal and gone in a nano-second.
And as bad as the tires/wheels get scuffed up against curbs etc., after all the years I still know why I do not ride as a passenger with her behind the wheel. Back when I met her and rode once as a passenger, I though for sure I wasn't going to live. I don't know how she has survived her driving, but her 2001 Escape still lives, as well as previous vehicles she had.
I'd be afraid to get her something with to small a engine as much as I've seen her lug rock, brick, soils, junk, and it won't get 0-60 fast enough for her. She's just brutal on the gas and brake. No wonder mpg sucks. Never could get her to drive the truck.

I dunno about pass, but this would my idea of fail...

Yup, that's easy enough to do, just take an engine that was 225HP stock (about 180HP to the tires) and make it make 550HP to the tires (about 630HP flywheel) and there ya go, you split the stock block! Only took almost 3x the stock power output

I tend to agree. While the test certainly looks great on paper and is impressive, typically the real final testing of any new product is done unknowingly by the consumer. It is a reason why many of us will never buy the first year of any new vehicle, engine, or transmission. Opinions vary.

Its been done for decades, too. The engineers who built the 2nd-Generation Hemi on a tight schedule to make it to the 1964 Daytona 500 have written similar stories. Bill Weertman, Tom Hoover, and some other "Ramchargers" alumni. They had to buy all new dynos to run sustained tests on those engines, since they were the most powerful they had tested at that time and the dynos had to absorb full power for something like 12 hours straight. Their dyno building could test several engines at a time, and the exhausts were routed up and out the roof of the building. One engineer said he would never forget the sound, walking in to work in the dark before sunrise in a Detroit winter, of multiple, un-muffled 426 Hemis running at full power during the extended tests. And they had cycles of load/no load, hot shutdown/heat-soak/restart and so on. Nothing like the subfreezing coolant through a hot engine that I recall, though. That's a really good example of how far gasket technology, cylinder head clamping force design, and things like that have come.


I recall seeing somewhere testing for Chrysler's "dash 3" truck, marine, and industrial engines (318-3, 440-3, 413 Industrial, Chrysler Marine 354/392 Hemis) was something like 24-48 hours at WOT, alternating between HP and torque peaks. I also recall that the 440 6-pack was put to the same tests, which is one reason they got the HD bottom end parts!
