Mandatory vehicle inspections - non political

If you compare SC and NY, NY has half the fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles driven. Using the link above, in 2007 SC had 2.11 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles driven, and NY was at 0.97. In absolute terms, yes, NY has ~19 million residents, SC has ~4 million. Either everybody's a better driver in NY (heh, yeah right!) or their vehicles are in better shape.

If it's not the drivers, it might be the vehicles. I've seen some real clunkers around me, vehicles that could barely get going, and doubtful they could stop.

Did some comparison between states that do have mandatory inspections and states that don't. Fatalities per 100 million miles driven.

States with inspections:

NY .97
PA 1.37
NH .96
NJ .95
NC 1.62

States without inspections:

AL 1.81
IL 1.16
OH 1.13
CA 1.22
KS 1.38

Can't really draw any conclusions. The item that can really skew the fatality data is if a state has mandatory seat belt use. NY does. I think Jersey does too. Not sure about other states.

Fatalities is not a good measure. The use of seatbelts as mentioned, the speeds involved, the safety ratings of the vehicles involved or the layout of the roads may play into it. I think that accidents per miles driven while not a great measure either would at least be better.

Here in NY its an outright scam.

The set rate for inspection is $22 per year. If you have a 96+ car you have to pass OBD2 emissions and safety. The safety inspection is very strict.

Some of the shops around Buffalo are offering "free inspection", or $5 or $10 inspection. This is for pass or fail inspection. They have you right where they want you at these places.

They say oh your car failed, it needs this repair. Then they rip your old inspection sticker off the window.

Or, oh your emergency brake isn't working (automatic car). We can fix that here for $$$$..

I can't wait to move to Arizona, where they just have plug in emissions on newer cars. No annual inspection.

You CANNOT mandate, common sense, diligence, rationality, or consideration for others by passing a law.


Like many laws this well meaning idea usually turns into a money making racket for society's predators.

Actually an annual inspection would cover due dilligence.

I'm in NJ also. This past December I took my bought new 2002 F-150 to the state inspection station for it's 2 year inspection. They FAILED me because because of a sticker the Ford factory puts on the lower right side of the windshield telling you what plant it came from. I bought this truck in December 2001 and have had it inspected multiple times without any problem about the Ford factory sticker. I pulled out of the inspection station and scapped off the factory sticker and backed into the inspection station and they then passed me. I asked the person who gave me the new state window sticker why did they fail me after all these years for the factory sticker. He said they get told to fail vehicles for different things during a certain time period and then ignore it. The following June my wife took her 2005 Explorer with the same factory sticker and she passed with no problem

NH does not have a mandatory seat belt law( thank god! )and one of the lowest rates. Conclusion drawn.

Having driven there, and seen how crazy the people drive, I can only conclude they wreck the vehicles long before age and failure to perform proper maintennance would make them unsafe. You take your life in your hands driving there.

This is true. Some parts of St. Clair county are tested. I moved out of Belleville, and no longer have to have my 1996 and newer cars emissions tested.

IL moved from sniffing the pipe to only testing 1996 and newer cars a few years ago.

Good thing, oilBabe's Camry has had a CEL for cat below efficiency for 100K+ miles.

I just check the codes periodically to make sure there is nothing more than that wrong and keep driving it.

A look through http://maine.craigslist.org/cto will show what folks around here know about cars. It could be the schools, the drivers ed, the idiot parents, etc.

"needs wheel barren for sticker"... well, jeez, turning up the radio to cover the noise isn't kosher? BTW there's no part named "barren".

I remember as a kid seeing a van that had blown a balljoint or tie rod end with one of its front tires pointing straight sideways. The skidmark aimed right for the ditch where it stopped, a single car accident. Luckily there wasn't much "stuff" around. To perhaps disprove by anecdote I've seen dozens of other crashes that were purely driver inattention, and a couple car fires that, if caused by oil leaks on exhaust, should have been caught by our state guidelines. But that one van could still be on the road.

The northeast is way more populated so naturally as drivers we're on top of each other; you can't really look at statistics per mile and draw one conclusion over another. There are more events per mile: stops, turns, potholes, intersections.

Are these the top 5/6 of each? That is, are they the 6 worst inspection states and the 5 best non-inspection states? Best/best? Worst/worst? 18 states have safety inspections. I'm sure that out of the remaining 32 there have to be some interesting stats.

Here in Virgina, a CEL for cat below efficiency will make you fail the emissions test (which pretty much only covers 5 counties in Northern Virginia) and you'll have to get the cat replaced or figure out some way to make both the light go off and the catalyst monitor be complete.

The safety inspection costs $16/year and takes about 30 minutes.

The bulk of the deaths in Miami on the roads seems to be from everyone texting and talking on their cell phone and nothing to do with car issues...I almost got killed not long ago when the guy behind me on I-95 was doing about 80 mph when traffic came to a complete stop...He looked up at the last possible second...My heart was racing that day...I thought I was done.

Just today every car behind me [in a 50 miles run] was either talking or texting while driving...What does that tell ya.

Everytime there is a major crash down here and somebody is killed [which is often] the first thing I say is that driver must have been texting.
