All the Mahle branded VW filters are made in Austria that I have recieved from multiple vendors.
I stopped buying Mann after I got a fuel filter made in CZ that was clearly not made to the same standard as the German version.

I instal many of those .
Like Mazdas from the 1990's....."It just feels right".
Those are all I use on my EA888s. Just got another dozen from FCP for $9 (the cost to ship all the other stuff for LRG back).
"z" means a gasket is enclosed in the box along with the filter.

.Our former Tiguan either got that Mann filter or the Hengst.

This is where they got the media for the Boss, but by now maybe improved like the Boss appears to be, the Mann was very “holey” early on. This is why I feel very comfortable with enough Boss to last a long long time, comfortable just like described here. What a sale they had.
Mahle shifted production of that filter for aircooled 911 a few years ago. The Mann equivalent (can’t remember the number) is still made in Germany.
Call Purolator and ask them what the efficiency of the Boss is … its still the same as the spec sheet, which is 99% > >46u regardless of how the media looks.
Unfortunately, country of manufacture does not guarantee quality wrt filters anymore— it’s hit or miss for a specific application.
For example, the Premium Guard EXs bought for the LS3 in my 2015 SS Sedan are made in…Vietnam , and are very high quality.
That being said, I am going to avoid Mann+ Hummel going fwd, as I am not pleased how they ruined the quality of Wix after they purchased this brand. So, I currently prefer Hengst for my Audi TT3.2 (It’s sad that formerly US- made and owned names are now just brands owned by foreign companies— and it’s not just filters….)

It may be MH have unruined Wix, new upgrades out. Have to move forward. XP is 99+%@23 microns for those that follow that metric. The Mann media shown here was the forerunner of the Boss media.

The Mann media shown above is not the forerunner of the Boss media. The media shown above is typical Mann+Hummel cartridge filter media. It's OEM to many European oil filters. It's common media for Purolator cartridges, WIX cartridges, and Motorcraft cartridges. It's nothing special, just a 10,000 mile oil filter.

When MH bought Purolator, they used the media pictured to start their Boss line. I don’t know where you get the idea this isn’t true. Puro never had this media before. Since I looked at both, I could see the recent Boss was tighter media than an older Mann had. Don’t know about the recent Mann cartridge, maybe they upgraded it also.
The pictured media is the full synthetic which should have a mesh backing, Mercedes calls it a fleece filter. The mesh isn’t seen in the picture but the pure white media gives it away, it has it to provide strength to the synthetic fibers.
