Mann W712/75 is made in Bosnia and has no ADBV. Is it safe to use in a 3800?

I needed to replace the hood struts of a 2001 Firebird with the 3800, and I saw that the Mann W712/75 is listed for that car and shipped from the same warehouse as the Stabilus hood struts, so I ordered it. The filter did not result in any additional shipping cost over just the two lift supports.

Anyway, when I got the filter, I had to look at it and report my findings.

Date code is 2105, so May 2021. Mann only gives you the month it was made, not the day. It says Made in Bosnia and Herzegovina on the box, and just Made in BA on the filter itself.

Other than lacking the ADBV, it's a typical European Mann construction, Same 4 holes in the typical shape, smells the same as all Euro Mann spin-on oil filters, same round holes in the center tube.

My question is, is this filter with no ADBV safe to use in a 3800? The filter is mounted sideways.

The old "smell test" ... 😄

If the oil filter is mounted above the sump oil level, there is always the chance that the oil above the sump oil level can drain back down to the level of the oil in the sump if the filter doesn't have an ADBV.

I picked one of these up on Amazon. Amazon says it confirmed that it fits a 2008 Buick Lacrosse CXL with the 3800 V6.

I got it today. Did you ever use this on the 3800 in question?

Edit, to see if that black thing in the filter was a rubber/silicone ADBV, I used a floss pick to poke it and it feels rigid and like metal, so that is definitely not a rubber/silicone ADBV.

The lack of an ADBV, if indeed it does lack one, may not matter much since the filter is mounted upside down underneath the engine anyway, so gravity should hold the oil in the filter without an ADBV.

Other than just being really odd looking and not having an ADBV apparently (Oh, those Germans!), the filter looks well constructed, better than anything I've ever pulled off the shelf of a Walmart anyway.

Advance Auto Parts description says:

"Return stop valve ensures that the filter and oil channels do not empty when the engine is switched off and that oil is readily available when the engine is started"

If that's accurate, it hints that they may have done something deeper inside this filter that performs largely the same function?

PartsHawk also says Compatible. Their cross-reference states it is compatible with several other filters which appear to be compatible with the Buick including the Wix 51040.

It seems that this application does not call for an ADBV.

Here is a dissection of the same filter with no ADBV:

Mann's catalogue doesn't have much information other than the GM OE part numbers (55352643, 93178952):

The GM OE filter made by Mahle also doesn't seem to have an ADBV:

The number on mine says "2310" not "1710", so possible revision.

It does have a seal on the baseplate, but it doesn't protrude outward as much as some of the other filters I've seen. It should be sufficient to prevent oil leaks though.

I don't see any strong reason not to use this since I usually change the oil every 3,000-3,500 miles anyway and it's not mounted horizontally.

I did not use it.

Some do, some don't-the oil filters from back in the day for the SBC didn't have a bypass nor an ADBV. They all mounted vertically, though-a horizontal mount should have an ADBV-or dry starts will likely happen.

this application is a horizontal mount
