Now that Shell has their 5w-40 CJ-4/SM out, is it really worth paying Mobil's High price tag for their Delvac 1? Not to mention I can't find any CJ-4/SM 5w-40 Mobil around me in FL. The shell is literally everywhere from wally to Advance for $17.xx/gal. But is there really a huge difference between the new shell and the Delvac 1?

Vehichle: 6.0 Ford w/OEM Racor filter, 15k miles.

Is it worth it? If you are referring to wear numbers...no. Shell Rotella T Synthetic has proven itself as a well formulated HDEO. Use it with confidence.

If you are operating under conditions that might benefit from a PAO base, then the Delvac 1 is worth it. Otherwise, the RTS has an excellent Group III base and should be just as good in most applications.

In a more severe thermal load situation over a longer interval, like with a turbo, I might take the Delvac 1 first. But the RTS should hang in there pretty good for a while, too.

This is no different from comparing any other Group III and Group IV oils against each other.

Thanks for the input guys. So is there anything in the CJ-4/SM 5w-40 category that is better than the Mobil Delvac 1?

I can't think of a more robust CJ-4 oil in that grade at the moment. I've always considered it the best runner in the XOM stable, provided it fits your application.

Amsoil might, but I think D1 should be just as robust. D1 is not a sissy M1 PCMO formula.

Last I checked, Red Line 5w-40 was not tested for CJ-4 compliance.

Hi,
in the Commercial lubricant's area Delvac 1 5W-40 and Rotella T 5W-40 have the runs on the Board with Fleets. Over many many years, over many millions of miles and in many thousands of engines. They also have official ACEA and API Certification along with engine Manufacturer endorsements

At this level - the Commercial level - this is extremely important

which is why I'm wondering why doesn't D1 say it meets the Ford oil spec and the new CJ-4/SM SYN Rotella does? I'm sure they're both good oils, but why didn't D1 advertise the ford spec?

Probably, but still you have to wonder.. look how many Fords are out there... that's a huge $$$ market. And for folks like me under a warranty.... It's about legal CYA issues. Even if we know better, if poo hits the fan I want an umbrella.

What does the VT365 spec? If Delvac 1 meets the specs for the VT365, you'll be fine, since they are the exact same engine

I understand, but it's Ford paying for it, and I have to deal with Ford. I can just imagine if something happen they'd do a oil sample, and then say this oil doesn't meet ford spec. My luck. I'm not real sure, never had such a warranty problem before. but that would really suck if that was the outcome. I rather CMA. I've heard ford is getting very tight about warranty work on the 6.0's.

Yes, I heard the same thing. Part of the reason they are working on an in-house diesel developed in Germany from what I understand.

I agree here, only thing is that you could take a sample right around the end of an oem interval run on the 6.0 and it would probably not meet Ford's spec...
They're getting tight with their warranty on the 6.0 liters because they refuse to admit they produced a substandard engine...lots of defective 6.0's. Lots of 6.0's that turned out well, too. But I don't believe Ford put their best into that one...as much as I like their trucks.

Would uoa actually tell a company if an oil met their spec? Assuming it was same recommended viscosity? Of course they could tell by looking at the container, but what if that info was not available? Would they go looking for a specific additive that only oils spec for their approval had?
