M1 Annual Protection?

The Mobil 1 annual performance will collect dust very well on the top shelf in my local Walmart. This Wally World has a hard time selling $28 Castrol gold bottle and it is in an area where average household income is fairly high. So Walmarts in other areas it is guruanteed not to sell at all.

I'll just wait for a better price and data should come in when affordable ...

That would explain the price. You get what you pay for with oil. Knowing XOM and knowing someone that worked for them before they do use the best components they can.

I would argue that what you get compared to a RL or Amsoil is a more modern formulation. Amsoil and RL are not IMO great choices for LSPI/DI engines. Mobil is most likely giving you a state of the art formulation that meets all modern specs and has a SA of .8%. This oil will keep engines very clean over long drains. They also claim superior performance on the IVA test which is good for cam lobe protection. The oil also probably has good TBN retention.

I just got back from my local WMT and the shelves are full of AP. EP is slim picking. It looks like a few bottles of AP were sold, and the product doesn't have any theft protection devices on it. I hope the product succeeds, but WMT was a poor choice to be selling it. In the $35 price range I think it would have been a hit at WMT, at these prices I have a feeling it will collect dust and be closed out.

Once we start seeing a VOA and some UOA's the product might take off here, maybe, but $50 is a lot of wood. I think most people on the fence would probably give Amsoil a shot instead at those price levels.

It will be a tough sell and interesting to see how it plays out. My next change will be with AP 0w20.

I'll give it a shot when it gets down to a more reasonable price, or goes on clearance because no one will pay that much for engine oil!

Obviously they have to cover themselves, but this could be a 2-or-so year oil for my driving style.

You mentioned certification - if you look at the back of the bottle and the cars it was tested in - and considering it is only (2) 20's and one 30 ... it has specs/certs based on a large market share now ... just not in the euro theatre ...
Maybe I don't understand what you mean on certification ? You meant specification as in this reply ?
Regardless - I have only one of six vehicles I'm interested in running it in ... and (to your comparison point) that motor now has M1 EP based on cost ... (AP and PUP too expensive or hard to get) ... waiting for price drop - but I don't expect it for $30 ....
There are oils without certs costing more ...

I'm just amazed that M1-AP hit the market with such a thud. I would have expected lots of discussion and conjure about the oil - is it GTL, or PAO or group 5, or...

I think XOM priced themselves right out of the BITOG market because Mobil isn't a boutique oil, and $50 for a 5 quart jugs is just too pricey. And, the biggest competition for M1-AP is M1-EP. You get a full year or 15,000 miles for half the price.

We have a nice Walmart nearby, and I never see any gaps in the stock of M1-AP, so it ain't selling well at Walmart either. The M1-EP is selling well though - typically only a jug or two when I check.

Y'all have any thoughts on this?

I just checked the price of Royal Purple 5w30 at Walmart, $37.97. So if it were priced in that range I could understand a little better. At first I was going to say $35 or even $39 at the top end.

You don't apply, you simply attain the status through having no formal approvals and a strong following amongst racers. Usually denoted by people arguing how good it is in the face of a million cries of 'if it's so good why don't they get it approved'
;p

Just a guess... but I think a car would be better served with two EP changes at $25 each, rather than one AP change at $50

That's what I'm doing but I don't own anything to justify the current cost. Mobil has seen great criticism on this site for being willing to show up with both certifications and backing mileage claims. Some in a similar price range do not. If I had an expensive car and not willing to go over 7500 miles with either - I'd run them B2B and test. That has not happened - meanwhile the "tribe" has determined this company cannot be allowed to sell boutique lubes at similar prices.
Too early on this one - I'm watching for $40 and will check it out ...

I do think think it is a matter of Mobil 1 not being allowed to sell a high priced oil or boutique oil is the thinking here. It is a matter of it will not be selling for $50 a container at Walmart. They are having a hard time selling oil at $28 in a 5 qt container. $50 is a non starter.

My walmart is putting security locks around the $50 jugs of Mobil 1 annual, I had to lol when I seen that.

The other oil to get the security lock chains is Rotella Jugs which are like 20 bucks a gallon.

Fair enough - Think that is well established - I'm just not of the opinion these "boutiques" that buy ingredients from the big boys are of superior knowledge in lubricants ... Boutique Superiority might need a similar acronym ...

AP is actually selling in the WMs in my area, however I'm not sure how my engines would benifit over the 0-20AFE I have used for years.

Well I am surprised that it is selling tig1. That is good to hear. And I agree with you that the Advanced Fuel Economy you have been running is not hardly a chump oil compared to the new AP oil. If it has done great then why change it huh

The valve cover pics you took of the Fusion were immaculate. Can't do hardly any better than that.

Hey 4wd I wasn't trying to give you a hard time at all there. I think you are in the right track with how things are done with the boutique oils. I will say though that Redline and Amsoil SS do hold up really well in long runs. But hey, PSD ran Mobil Super for 14k miles and it held up really pretty good too. So hey, who knows what may work well in some applications?? Kind of interesting at the end of the day.

I have to admit that I've thought of getting the Mobil 1 Annual oil. But I just cannot turn down my regular go to products when they are at good prices.

Walmart that is close to me normally has oil fly off the shelves (they are always out of almost everything).

M1 AP has a whole shelf to itself. I was amazed when I saw one jug missing the other day. Can't wait until it gets a big price drop or that whole shelf goes to clearance.
