M1 and sticking lifter?

It's very difficult to describe what the noise was. It sounded like something was grinding and clacking at the same time. It was so bad my Dad had my Mom shut the engine off immediately to not cause any harm to the engine.

My Dad said the oil had about 1k miles on it at the time.

As a fluke my Dad suggested an engine flush. I personally have never used them so I had no opinion to give.

Per the directions you add the flush to the engine as is. My Dad started the car the noise was horrible. He took the oil cap off while the car was idling and added the flush. As he was pouring it in, the engine pitch changed and within 30 seconds of adding the flush the noise completely went away.

My Dad followed the directions running the car for like 10 minutes.

He drained the oil changed the oil and filter and the noise has not returned.

Whatever it was it was in the head not the block and though I have taken apart 4G63's I have never torn down a 2JZ. I have never heard anything like it before.

My Dad is also coming from 30+years of automotive experience not as a mechanic but body shop. My Dad and I though not "mechanics" we have years of knowledge in the car world.

We both shook our heads on this one. Very unusual. The IS300 has been running like a Swiss watch ever since.

Go figure.

As you say carbon happens in every engine and some does get past the rings, its the nature of the beast.
The other thought i had was what if the oil filter at some point (not necessarily the last one) had a tear or a split seam?
Its rare but it does happen, there is the occasional defective filter.

There are many ways that unfiltered oil could have gone through the engine none of which are the fault of the oil.
Mobil 1 is a very good oil as is PP and others, i don't doubt something happened but what exactly is anyones guess, the oil is the last thing i would think of as the culprit.
IMHO this would have happened regardless of what was in the sump at the time.

When I did the heads/cam/intake on the Lincoln I had something stick or there was a chunk of carbon that broke loose (it has flat-tops) in the #5 cylinder because when I fired it up I thought I spun a rod bearing the noise was so bad. I immediately shut it down, pulled the plug, valve cover, checked the rocker, pushrod...etc. Couldn't find a darn thing wrong with it.

I figured what the heck, it has over 300,000 on it, what have I got to lose. I fired it back up, the noise was immediately there and continued for about 30 seconds and then just tapered off and went away. It never made that noise again, and that was years ago.

To this day I have no idea exactly what caused it, of course I have theories but since I never tore it back down to investigate (and it turned out there was no need to) I never found out.

Sounds like you made the right choice.

The PP will do a good job in your dad's car.

For people like us, it's important to have faith in the products we use.

Moving to Pennzoil, no matter the cause of the sticking lifter, will give your father that necessary reassurance.

Taking the effort to find Pennzoil Ultra for future changes in this car might even be worthwhile.

What your describing in your Lincoln is EXACTLY what it sounded like.

That is exactly what my Dad is doing. Weather it was the oil or not, to my Dad its just reassurance type of thing. Who knows, in another 100k miles maybe the Penzoil will do the same thing haha.
