M1 0w40FS vs 10w40HM

Or perhaps you should understand that HT/HS is but one consideration among several.
I would consider the 10w40 HM for any of the following reasons:
- it's cheaper
- I don't need a 5w or 0w for my climate / application
- 18 years old would definitely fit "high mileage" to me
- the 10w40 has better specs / approvals
I thought I had already made it clear?

As asked above what better approvals are we talking about here? I gave you several advantages to oils with demanding approvals.

Who cares if a 0W winter rating is needed or required in this instance. It’s not detrimental and it illustrates a better product.

Which 15W40 is same product line as Mobil1 0W40 FS?
He didn’t imply that. For example, 15w40 Duron has a higher HTHS than 0W40 Duron.
I could find other examples where 15W40 has a higher HTHS than a 0w40 in the same product line. Perhaps Rotella and Delvac.
When looking at Euro approvals, don’t compare them to HDEO approvals or approvals in other than the same grade.
The gold standard for dual rated engine oils in North America is API CK-4/SP or SN.
The “base stock” argument is pointless imo.

Why do we need HDEO oils here? Both Rotella and Delvac are inferior to Mobil1 0W40. Starting HTHS might be higher, but Noack, oxidation, deposit control, and shear stability won't be as good.
Also, does the engine need high initial HTHS that will create more heat, or it needs balanced HTHS that will stay similar over OCI? Yes, that is exactly why base stocks, polymers etc. are important. Whether the engine is dual-rated or not is irrelevant. No CK4 oil will perform as that 0W40 in it.

You claimed the 10W-40 had better specs/approvals, and you've been asked to expound on that a couple of times now.

The 10W-40 HM oil is API SP with 800ppm of phosporous.
The 0W-40 FS oil is API SP, ACEA A3/B4, MB 229.3/229.5, BMW LL-01, VW 502 00/505 00 and Porsche A40 with 930ppm of phosphorous.

So the 0W-40 has 7 more approvals, guaranteeing a very high level of performance, than the 10W-40, and has 130ppm more of the primary AW additive, phosphorous.

Objectively, it's the superior lubricant.

Duron 10w40 has 1,200 phosphorus, does that mean it’s a better product?
It seems like some members are more interested in scoring points than posting useful information.
