LSJr new Motor Oil Geek: Techron and Top Tier

But the video is talking about intake valve deposits.
I'm wondering how how fuel additives get to that portion of the engine if it's direct injected.
Valve overlap. How does fresh filtered air form deposits on intake valves? It doesn’t. Combustion byproducts are leaving the deposits.

Of course you’re right. It’s PCV gunk. The fuel that gets into the oil evaporates at running temperature and delivers PEA to the back of the intake valves! Geniuses I tell you!

Yes, from oil. Hence the requirement for low volatility.

SOOO, reviewing what we learned from this video today.
Oil dilution is actually good for the intake valve deposits for GDI engines, since it carries more additives though the PCV valve and onto the back side of the intake valves.
OK got it!

Yes, little value there …
I have owned GDI’s over a decade and up to 137k without cleaning valves.
I have cured rough idle several times with PEA and to me it’s worth grabbing on sale and using before an oil change …
My Jeep is port injection - so likely gets more from it …
Same here. Even one 2.0T Hyundai Thetta II...240k mi. Never had to clean the valves.

Good video. Mainly a review of the famous AAA top tier report but I did learn something. Top Tier+ is coming out this year with even higher detergent levels. Looking forward to that.
I wonder if this is the result of an updated ASTM test for GDI engines?

Guess I need to somehow persuade my wife to stop filling up with the Kroger non top-tier at the grocery store? At least shell will honor their points discounts. Was hoping that the bottle of Techron complete prior to an oil change might mitigate the problems but it sounds like that additive is more for fuel injector cleanliness than the intake valve deposit issue?

Soooo, Where does that leave those of us with direct injected engines?
We've already determined that fuel doesn't get to the intake valves, right?

So is there a problem that top tier fuel will fix (or even the bottle of additive)?
And if so, how does top tier fuel get additives get to those intake valves?

well toptier+ apparently increases the treatment rates to help with GDI valves.

and it does help, just not as much. the PEA additive doesn't like to burn so any reversion past the intake valves will get additives on those valves. That's where the majority of the depsits come from aswell, IMO.

it's the same active ingredient.

Top Tier"+"
Is that + the higher premium octane fuels like 93? I've seen some stations advertise more additives in the more premium octanes.
Yes , some do . There's also a video that The Motor Oil Geek talks of gas brands that have more additives in their Premium . These are from a 13 year old video , but still could apply to some brands .

Injector tips still must remain unobstructed and there is the internal structure which needs to be free of varnish. Here is a new standard (Top Tier +) which is geared toward TGDI.

I found it very interesting. I have always used the cheapest fuel available. The price difference between Chevron and cheap gas is about $1.50 per gallon here. So about $30 more to fill up at Chevron.

I figured that the govt bare minimum should be fine. Maybe not?

My wife fills up where ever she can. I typically run two bottles of Redline SL1 in her Pilot. One bottle at 60% olm and a second bottle at 20% olm. It’s DI. My Tundra benefits from both systems. DI when needed and port injection. That gets redline every 5K before an oil change. Top tier every fill up.

Non-TT & 1 Techron every OCI is really just cleaning up stuff left by the Non TT gas, while TT gas all the time (with or w/o Techron) keeps the deposits from forming in the first place.

The only non-TT gas I trust is bp since they've been in & out of TT branding.
