Another exciting and interesting Tribology video by LSJr.
Edit added to comply with site copywrite and media rules:
I like his closing statement about how a 0W20 in different geographic and climatic conditions will effectively be different viscosities over a very broad range. I.E. in Alaska in winter it will be very thick compared to in Australia in summer.
In my personal case this is why I run 5W, 10W and even 15W or 25W (case specific), because where I live it is so hot they still perform as thinner oils than say the above 0W20 Alaska winter example.
I also like that he adds credibility to using thicker oils than 0W20 to potentially increase engine life (again on a case by case basis). In my opinion the best way to reduce the environmental impact of motor vehicles is to extend their usable lifespan, delaying the need for replacement as the resources required for manufacture of new vehicles are far greater than running and maintenance - irregardless of any small fuel economy gains from 0W20 or thinner oils.

He claims at the end that GM is using this viscosity change as a "band-aid". I disagree. These engines, and many others, should never have been spec'd for 0W-20.
agree.

so these guys have been running an oil, which is now understood by GM (which they said to use) which is not adequate for the engine. I say, GM needs to start providing new engines to folks.

Debatable. Not yet proven. Speculation.

That said, so by saying that, he knowingly titles his threads with click-r-bate words. Some shreds of respect for the guy are wearing thin.

I watched it in full. There is nothing very controversial in here and the information is generally good. A lot of people should listen to him here.

He basically just says that under higher loads and lower rpm, a thicker oil may protect the bottom end better, depending on engine specifics. He also points out that you can run thicker oils in engines without damage, but points out that it may or may not translate to less wear. He also talks about temperature’s outsized effect on viscosity to mitigate the concerns of the “follow the spec” people.

Overall pretty good, sound stuff.

Unfortunately YouTube often won’t promote videos without creators doing this. I put more of the blame on them since it’s a deliberate action made based on analyses of what affects the metrics they seek to maximize. It’s one of the unfortunate side effects of the unidimensional, hyper-stats-driven, and low-trust ways these companies track their success.

The summary of this video, which I am deriving from members here, is “Duh.” He is unwatchable to me.

Don’t we already know this?

Honestly, I do not get the Fan-boyism from members here saying it was “exciting” and we should “listen to him.” He didn’t say anything we don’t already know.

I’m with you @Pablo about this click bait clown. The only thing surprising here is the cult following he seems to have, even right here on BITOG. Baffling to me.

If you never got stung by design carelessness, yeah, it's not relevant and your sarcasm hits a mark.
If you're among the many who have been, you now have a new generation of company.
You mean like the design " carelessness " of Hyundai engines that have had NHTSA issue heavy fines to Hyundai ( twice) for not standing by the legal problem resolution process for engine failure and then blaming customers for the engine failures with the engines still in the warranty period ? When the car owners had all of their service done at the stealership ?

Some of the same people raging at LSJr here are the same folks who are posting "should I use 0w40/15w50/10W60 in my 2020 Nissan Versa because I drive 5 mph over the speed limit on the freeway".

Maybe his videos are too long for some; I rather perform long form content and I would think most people that are still on a forum in the year 2025 don't just want 10 second shorts. Sure, he generalizes a bit and dumbs down some topics to speak to a wider audience, but other than a handful of true subject matter experts here, he can educate a great many people. I mean look at the alternatives - the young cowboy guy who is an Amsoil distributor, Project Farm, the guy that boils oil in coffee pots, etc etc etc. I'd say LSJr is one of the better voices on YT and I appreciate listening to him.

See, I don’t get the all the fuss and bother. I think it has more to do with certain viewers’ own perceptions, perhaps because he displays characteristics that certain people don’t want to see in themselves, and it triggers them, or something. It seems Jungian to me.

And sometimes people just don't like a certain type of entertainment. You know, a cigar is a cigar.
