Lower insurance cost vehicle?

As a few BITOG'ers know, I've been thinking about offloading my Yaris (a lemon, to put it nicely). Anyhow, I was at the Ford dealership in the Markham, Ontario mall (partial dealership, anyways), and they had a Mustang Bullit on clearance for 29K.

Salesman: "How can I be of help to you today?"

Me: "Exactly how old do I have to be to have a mid-life crisis?"

SWANK!!!! Did you take it for a rip?

Nah, it was in the showroom in the mall (and that particular one was already sold), not to mention I was driving a chartered bus for a basketball team. They had just stopped for a pre-game meal at East Side Mario's in the same lot... But after over a year of "restauranting", it didn't appeal to me, so I just ventured into the mall to do some quick x-mas shopping.

I must say however, it was awefully tempting to book a test-drive.

Thanks for all of the imput folks. The websites are also great and will help make her decision much easier.

I second the Buick. I'm 23 and driving one. The 3800 is reliable as heck, don't ask about gas mileage, and they are seen as old-person cars, so people treat them cautiously. Plus they can take a beating like a champ.

Why in the world would you have collision/comprehensive on a 1991 Civic? You could outright purchase the car in two or three months of that! It makes no financial sense.

For liability only, well, around here it would be $100 for six months!

Maybe your laws are different. Good luck.

Believe it or not, I can insure a V8 Mustang for about that, between $100 and $120 for six months. Of course, I'm a 43 year old male who's never had an accident. I've owned three such Mustangs, and each time I owned them "outright", so I don't need to carry the comp/collision.

My insurance just got majorly rate cut! On my 98 CVPI, I used to pay 420.00 for 6 months of coverage with progressive. I have liability(15,000 is state min, I carry 25K), and comprehensive(I live in the highest area of deer collisions).

This upcoming 6 month period my rates got cut to 294.00 for 6months of the same coverage, I supposed because I turn the magic age in a few days, 25.

For comparison purposes only, dont let it [censored] you off.

I punched in my cars and its only $100 cheaper but I'm out in the sticks. I have a bricks and mortar broker too so I guess I could save more if I went through TD or some company like that.

If I lived in Toronto though I'd love to have the flat rate system!

What's it cost to insure a sled or an ATV? My very slow 250cc skidoo tundra cost $220 last year... Some guys in the states pay $50 for a similar sled.

I dont have a sled so I dont know. What I can say thats really great about SGI was it cost me $219/year (yes thats year not monthly) to insure my beater truck when I was 16.

Two words-

Taurus Wagon.

Agreed. I have two otherwise identical saturns, a wagon and a sedan, and my liability rate of the wagon is 75% that of the sedan.

Read somewhere a while ago that the astro van had the cheapest insurance around... but then, a top heavy RWD vehicle is not the best for the new driver...

Incidentally, your insurance agent is not really working for you, if he's hiding behind "trade secrets" blah blah blah.

Was your truck a farm vehicle? My Neon came out to $550 and I'm a "perfect" driver

And getting older too! A V8 pickup in my area would be over $3k for a 16 year old...

Not a farm vehicle just an old one (1965 Merc Truck). It was $219 becuase it was so old and becuase it only holds 3 passengers the rates are less than for cars. My 75 Camaro at the same age was $396/year. Because it is govt insurance they dont age discriminate. In Sask it use to be that you vehicle rate was fixed and if you were a bad driver the cost of the actual drivers licence went up not. Because I have been demerit free for over 8 years they now give me a 16% discount on anything I insure, so even with inflation the camaro is still under $500.

Dont let anyone tell you otherwise, govt insurance is the way to go, the people who have it in BC, SK and MB know it and will never let it go.
