So for the last couple days I've noticed the gushed reading a little low . But didn't pay much attention to it. But now I'm wondering why. It runs fine the thermostat is probably 5 months old and temp sensor is the new style and less than a year old. It has a 195 Stant Tstat. Ill post a picture and tell me what y'all think it could be. http://i1090.photobucket.com/albums/i377/dakota1820/IMG_20120524_071758.jpg

That's more than likely the problem. Stant hasn't made anything decent in years.
Get an OEM from the dealer.

X2!

Everyone says to get stant thermostats for the car. Uggg. Would the thermostat really cause that? Maybe its sticking open a little?

I can't remember what vehicle you have.

My Dodge has a one wire temp sender just for the gauge that went bad and was just reading half of the normal range until I replaced it.

The rubber seal in the t stat tends to wear and disappear, short circuiting and having water get around.

If you still have your receipt, get it warrantied.

OE is going to be hard to find for a dead brand. Stant seems to be everywhere. Not saying that's a good thing. It's a poor design; seems like the engine is so efficient when it's winter the 'stat never opens; it just radiates enough heat from the oil pan etc. They probably came up with the rubber thing to (desperately) try and warm it up a little faster.

I assume your coolant temp sensor is in good shape and your coolant is fresh, eg not acidic and eating your rubber stuff. I remember you going through this car, stem to stern not long ago.

Yep I tested the temp sensor it's good I'm changing the stat now and getting rid of the dexcool. Sorry for the bad spelling my auto correct thinks its smarter than me

So again my temp is reading just a hair above a quarter. No driveability issues the cars getting great fuel mileage so what gives? The stat has been changed and fixed it but its doing it again it only fixed it for a couple days but I've been so busy with the yota I haven't fiddled with it. What do you guys think?

You need a scan tool with data stream to look at the sensor reading. I just looked up the info on your car it doesn't have a separate sending unit, the pcm sends a signal to the guage.

The temp sensor sends a signal to the pcm, the pcm sends a signal to the gauge. A scan tool will show you what temp the pcm is seeing.

An ohm meter will tell you what the temp the sensor is sending. A scan tool will tell you what the PCM is seeing. There can be a difference. Of course, if you bring your ohmmeter to the PCM harness connector as well as ECT connector that will tell you both.

Interesting how people bad mouth Stant thermostants. In over 50 years of working on a wide variety of cars I can't remember ever having a bad one out of the box or one failing prematurely - especially so since the mid 90's. Not true of most "OEM" (Motorcraft and AC Delco in particular) and ones that came in new cars - (The exception being our 2005 Camry).

FWIW found a couple of interesting pages:

lI checked the coolant temp at the reservoir and it is at 205 degrees so the stat is working. When I replaced the first temp sensor it read at the same place then the new one read higher and now after 8 months it reads lower to. The temp sensor I replaced wasn't an original either. So maybe its the temp sensor? Either way I imagine its not a big deal
