Looking for a New Oil Filter

What is the leaf spring for?

I thought it was leaf or coil in a given filter. I didn't know there could be both in 1 filter.

It's not both ... it's one or the other to hold the guts of the filter tight. The thing you mentioned with the coil spring is for the bypass valve. It this case it has its own spring, a coil spring. There's still a separate leaf spring to hold the guts tight. Many oil filters with a leaf spring may have a bypass valve with a coil spring design.

Thank you all for the interesting education about oil filters. I used to use Baldwin B35. I'm currently using Oreilly Microgard Select MSL51036. In future I'm going to use NAPA Gold 1036. Each of those is nearly double the length of the stock oil filter for my Buick 3800 S2.

I dont know why Autozone STP XL line doesn't come up often, when its all basically the same or better then Oreilly Microguard select.
You make a good point, but in my case there's not an Autozone near me. My local choices are Walmart, NAPA, or Oreilly, which is why I usually only mention those 3 and their products. Store location is ⅔ of the battle for me.

If I lived near an Autozone, I'd mention Autozone and STP XL filter a lot.
