My car has an extra few inches of space that could easily accommodate a longer filter than the FL820S. I don't want one that will have the wrong bypass pressure setting, or have the bypass on the opposite end of the filter from the FL820S. Does anybody know if there's compatible Motorcraft filter I could use?

It's a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria P71 4.6L SOHC V8 if you need to know.

Why would you want to do that? It's one of the larger filters out there nowadays...and at 3.38 at Walmart, it's a darn good value. I run mine 10,000 miles in a Modular 4.6, with insoluables at less than 0.2.

I want to start stretching my OCI's to 5K. I just figure that there's nothing wrong with more filter media, especially since a longer filter will fit with ease.

It won't hurt, but, it won't help. 5000 miles isn't stretching this filter at all. In fact, since filters get MORE EFFICIENT as they are used longer, simply adding more and more filter media isn't "better", unless there is some problem you are battling...such as loosening a lot of gunk with an Auto RX treatment. Otherwise, worry about a meteorite hitting your car...it's more likely to occur, compared to the standard FL820S being somehow related to the engine lasting less than about 300,000 miles. B-)

Let's see what we can pull out of our behinds

AutoRX is indeed something I'm considering doing, and that's what actually gave me the idea of going with a larger filter. I figured I'd just keep using the larger filters.

I gave up after 5 pages, I guess I should have gone a bit deeper. Thanks.

I have run 5000 mile OCI's with an FL 820s for the years

The only issue I can think of is from what I have seen for the non-Ford FL-820S type fitment filters is the bypasses are all set way high except Fleetguard's (made by Cummins). The Ford OEM filters are made by Purolator.

Fleetguard makes a part number, the LF16002 with the bypass set to the same 55 kPa (7.98 psi) as Ford OEM filters, and synthetic media comparable to the Amsoil EaO. The synthetic media offers more consistent filtration and better flow than other filters. The only thing different in construction is the bypass is at the dome end rather than the thread end when compared to the Purolator made Ford filters.

5k isn't "stretching" for a Motorcraft filter...not by a long shot. Thousands and thousands of cop cars, taxis, etc go that far and last 250,000 miles (and more) easily.

No need to use a larger filter for ARx, just use a cheap one during the cleaning and rinse phases, then go back to the FL820S when you're done. Your motor will love you for it!

Over at the Ford truck forum, there's a lot of discussion about Ford's going to 7,500 recommended OCI's, and they use the standard 820S.

I have a 2005 Ford 3.0L using 820S and cut one open after 5K miles.

I posted pictures and comparative analysis (to other app's). See Tale of Three Filters in this forum.

My conclusion was the FL-820S looked like it could go 10K miles in my app. So Ford's 5K warranty and even there newer 7.5K recommendation looks conservative.

Base end bypass, silicon ADBV, and PureOne-like performance at $3.48 walmrt...what is not to like ???

Does anyone know a Bosch or Mobil 1 filter part number that will be FL-820S compatible, but longer?

I'm about 1800 miles into my Auto RX clean phase, and each time around the 700-800 mile mark on a new filter using the FL-820S my oil pressure has started to drop. I changed the first one out at 1024 miles and the pressure went back up to normal, but it's back down again.

I want to buy a larger filter to use during the rinse phase so I don't have to get under my car during a Montana winter to change the filter out.

I doubt that there are two Mobil 1 filters for that size ..then again ..Chevy went to same thread ..but is shorter, iirc, than the FL820S.

Here's a big boy in the M22x1.5 thread. It's for a Ford Truck

Donaldson lists the P550965 as the direct replacement:
Lube Filters Product Attributes
A - OD (Inches): 3.67
B - Thread Size (Inches): M22 X 1.5
C - Length (Inches): 3.58
D - Gasket OD (Inches): 2.81
E - Gasket ID (Inches): 2.42
Relief Valve Setting (PSI): 15
Anti Drain Valve (Y/N): Yes
Product Type Description: LUBE SPIN-ON FULL FLOW
Primary Application: FORD LIGHT TRUCK

And as Gary has found, seems the only suitable "longer" filter is for a Ford truck....

Donaldson lists it as the P55061:

Lube Filters Product Attributes
A - OD (Inches): 3.67
B - Thread Size (Inches): M22 X 1.5
C - Length (Inches): 5.42
D - Gasket OD (Inches): 2.83
E - Gasket ID (Inches): 2.46
Relief Valve Setting (PSI): 17-22
Product Type Description: LUBE SPIN-ON FULL FLOW
Primary Application: ONAN 122-0550
