I always see these comments about how one or another posters claim that their engines feel more lively and responsive on 5w-20, versus 5w/30. I say there is NO way for human physical senses to detect any difference between these two oils.

While there may be a scientific measurement of a microscopic difference between the two nobody can feel the difference in responsiveness.

More nonsense being posted on BITOG? I think so.

Well, years ago, many people indicated their Hondas did not feel the same when running GC.

When do people start to notice? 40 weight 50, 60?

I suspect in a very low HP car like mine pumping losses would be quite noticeable.

Some people are so sensitive that they can just feel things other, less sensitive mortals just can't...

It will always be what I call "The Litany of the Too's":

Too hot. Too cold. Too warm, too cool. Too loud, too faint, too hard, too soft, too high, too low, too clear, too opaque, too spicey, too bland, too sweet, too sour, too windy, too calm...

Too slow to rev.

You get the point.

Cheers!

p.s. Too bad, too!

I can't feel the difference but i will debate all day and night i can hear a difference, not between vis but between oils.

I think so too! Its all in the head if someone didn't tell them they wouldn't know the difference.

In cold weather and before oil warm up you might be able to notice a difference at light throttle between 5W20 and 5W30.

I sure can fill drag of cold oil during warm up in the winter as I'm sure most others have.

No it's never too anything always runs good. Both my Ford engines make less noise on conventional oils in particular VWB. Yes, i can hear the difference. As i said there not bad but there is less overall engine noise.

The real issue is that a number here have brainwashed themselves into believing that using a 5-20 or 0-20 is a better, intellectually superior choice for every vehicle in every circumstance.

They believe they are so intellectually superior to the "unwashed masses" who dare to use a 5-30 or (heaven forbid!) a Neanderthalic 10-30. Therefore, by them using a 5-20 or 0-20, their vehicle WILL run better, faster, smoother, and get better MPG's, (whether it does or not.)

x-20. The official "Oil of the Gods". Oh my.

Superior or not is not the question. The observation is that the engines rev more easily with 0w-20 then with 30w. The answer is quite simple. The engine was designed with the tolerances for a 20w. Using a 30w is going to cause a drag. For crying out loud one might use axle grease and say there is no difference.

from what I've read the engine in my Liberty used to spec for 5w-30 and was later spec'd for 5w-20; since I am still well under warranty and a low mileage engine I will stick with 5w-20 for a while to come

Just fill it with MMO or WD40 and it will rev like crazy, not much protection though.

Yes and the new ones are spec'd for 5w30 again. I wonder why?

I can vouch for that too. Mine needs premium and if filled with regular, u can feel the difference.

5w-20 calls for tighter tolerances --> higher production costs if your mfg equipment is not up to snuff.

Wait a minute you mean BMW, Mercedes are using shoddy out dated equipment. OMG i never thought of that.
They are saving money using old pre war junk machinery to generate more profit, nasty buggers.
How about the Toyota, Honda and Nissan engines sold in Europe that spec 5w30?
I guess they using old clapped out equipment that's not up to snuff to grind cranks just for the Euro market.

Can you provide any links to threads where people make this claim? I don't think I've seen it recently, but I don't read too much in the oil section. It's too boring for me.

when did Chrysler re-spec the 3.7L V6 for 5w-30 again? mine's a 2011...did they do this for the 2012's? or are you talking about the new version being redesigned for 2013 and beyond (which I'm guessing will get the Pentastar 3.6L v-6 engine)?
