Everyone must have been sleeping in accounting/economics class. What you are looking at is economy of scale, higher margin required and oil as a profit center vs loss leader.

In our Napa store group, PZ platinum costs us about $5.50 a quart and HQ pays about $5 a quart. We sell it for $5.99 to $6.99 a quart depending on the store. As you can see, Walmart due to their buying power and lower cost of doing business(lower margin), can sell the oil for our cost or less.

Just to turn on the lights, pay salaries, pay rent, support local causes etc, our cost of doing business is approx 29%. If we don't sell for more than that, we lose money. I'm sure NY stores cost of doing business is higher than the midwest.

Walmart (I have a friend who is a store manager)views oil as a loss leader. They sell at a lower margin & sometimes at a loss vs other items because they realize most customers coming into buy oil will buy higher margin items along with the oil.

You just can't compare Walmart vs smaller stores. Kind of like a 1L bottle of Dew is $1.59 in a gas station vs $5 for a case at Walmart-economy of scale.

Just my two cents,

Dave

i could not imagine paying that. i paid 3.99 a qt for PP at o'reilly yesterday.

canadian prices are scary. and 15% VAT tax on top of that. the only thing i want from canada this fall is Krown.

That's why I only buy EP fron AZ and AAP when they do their oil and filter specials. Otherwise it's WM for me.

agreed w/ what you said, but soda is a little different. soda is REAL cheap, and a profit maker. in the same grocery store, you could buy a 2liter for around a buck (warm) from the rack or a nice, cool, refreshing 20oz from a fridge right by the register for a $1.29!
when we do buy soda we wait for sales, like 4 12 packs for $10 or whatever promotion they are running that week.

The price you paid is their sale price. O'Reilly's regular price .50 less than what AZ had listed.

Fascinating. Freud has his ways.

Their 5qt jug was was almost $40

Store brand conventional 5w30 was $3.79.

Way too much, I know they cant compete with WM on prices but almost double ? Personally I wont pay that.

I wish WM would carry m1 synth atf, right now only AZ has it near me and its $8/qt

Actually, PP 5W-30 and 10W-30 is cheap in Canada when bought in the 4.4L jug. Typically on sale for $19.88 at WalMart and in the low 20's elsewhere plus the VAT (HST) of 13%.

I just paid $23.50 for 5 US qt jug of Mobil 1 0w-30 ($2.50 more than the Valvoline full synth 5w-30) @ Walmart here in NorCal
