Living near Austin TX. Considering a move to TX.

I didn’t know about the I-35 construction, but if OP is retired they can avoid this area and find alternative routes.
It isn't really possible to avoid I-35 in Austin, it is the main north-south thoroughfare located right in the middle of the city.
Alternatives...
Trying to avoid using I-35 would entail using Lamar blvd, a main thoroughfare with heavy urban traffic, about 100 stop lights (none of which are timed to allow free traffic flow), and dozens of Capitol Metro busses that stop in the right travel lane every block or two.
On the west side there is MOPAC (Loop 1) for a north-south thoroughfare but it is usually bumper-to-bumper stop-and-go traffic most of the day, the express lanes have tolls (which doesn't gain you much because they are also bumper-to bumper), and, like I-35, it is ALSO torn-up.
On the east side there is the 130 toll road, but it is FAR east, not anywhere close to downtown. Furthermore, they are getting ready to tear it up as well.
The environmentalists and anti-growth advocates have successfully been holding-up the expansion of Austin's road network for over 40 years. Even now they are trying to get the I-35 expansion project cancelled. Their answer is to force everyone in Austin to ride bicycles! NO KIDING!!!

If you look at a map of Austin, you can see that everything hugs I-35. There's no getting around it if you've got business in the city or live there. Compare that to Houston, which spreads out in concentric loops. Traffic here can be really bad, but Austin? No thanks. I sometimes travel to Manor (just east of Austin) on business, and it's growing like crazy, but I don't have to deal with I-35 when I go there from here, so not bad at all. San Antonio isn't bad for traffic either for a big city. Between Austin and San Antonio, bumper to bumper speedway. Toll road 130, kind of an Austin bypass, has the fastest speed limit in the country @ 85.

Texas in general his higher speed limits than pretty much anywhere. Nowhere else have I seen 75 MPH on 2 lane highways.

You had me until you mentioned CO as a retirement location. CO is without a doubt turning into the next California/ Illinois (more specific Denver is the next Chicago/ San Francisco).
The Springs isn't what it used to be either, unfortunately. Just a matter of time...

I35 is not that bad, it’s all relative. I lived in some heavily populated areas with much worse traffic and i35, even during rush hour doesn’t compare to Toronto or Bay Area traffic.

I commute outside of major gridlock hours and it flows pretty well. OP is retired, it’s a non issue IMO.

You are not taking into account that they are getting ready to tear I-35 up from 183 on the north side to 71 on the south side, including taking down the upper decks and constructing a new bridge over Ladybird Lake. I reiterate, this is going to cause the trucks to back-up for 50 miles in both directions. Furthermore, this is not going to be a 4 or 5 year construction project, it will likely stretch out for several decades. Keep in mind, TXDOT is in-charge of this project, and they are easily the most dysfunctional government agency that I know of. I know people who work there and I can tell you stories that would leave you shaking your head in disbelief.
I had to go to the doctor's office this morning. 20 years ago this would typically have taken 15 minutes, it took 55 minutes this morning at 11 am (not even rush or lunch hour).

The Dripping Springs area is quite nice. Lots of breweries and distilleries. Lots of new construction along Hamilton Pool.

I-35 is terrible. The entire Austin area is terrible. The roads were designed by kids with crayons.

@Cmobile - I saw your post about the free oil change at Walmart. Congratulations on your retirement!

Have you narrowed your search in Texas? Or are you going to wait until you've been here for a bit to get acclimated to how traffic and other factors affect your day-to-day life vs other people's experiences?

Unfortunately the same is true here. Average time on the market was 80 days when we listed. Now it's 107 days.

So we're waiting til our house sells, then we're heading back to my birthplace.
