Living near Austin TX. Considering a move to TX.

Austin has lots of hospitals and very important to consider when you retire. You don’t want to be in an area with few healthcare providers.

That is another reason to move to a larger city. Our tiny town is extremely limited in this area. All complex procedures require a trip to the Valley (aka Phoenix)

Has your Wife been talking to my Wife? Almost verbatim what my Wife brings up daily.
🤣

Our 2 hour trip down the mountain, is 4am travel time, we like the early flights. The Hill, as it's affectionately called, has been closed on occasion, necessitating alternate routes, or waiting hours for the road to open back up. Wild fires, car crashes, road construction, and my personal favorite, the people who think they belong in a Fast & Furious movie taking the curves faster than they, and their car, can manage really makes me nervous.

Assuming you are in the greater Prescott/Sonoma area?

As others have noted - you want to have medical facilities close enough to matter. We live WSW of Houston - but can reach the big clinics/hospitals in 45 minutes for specialists etc - small town doctors otherwise … Our tiny hospital has a helicopter pad and you might spot a landing by the ER entrance

For those that have lived, or currently live in the area between San Antonio and Killeen, what is your opinion on living here?

Moving form North Central AZ, low humidity to high humidity will take some getting used to.

Aside from climate, what's the general consensus?

West of Austin in Lakeway or Bee Cave is very nice and away from the hustle and bustle.

I was thinking of this area when we move out of Florida.

The area between San Antonio and Killeen is absolutely vast, and there are huge cultural changes between those areas.

I've lived in various cities in between the two.

For a retirement I would consider Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park, but bring your money they are not cheap suburbs at all.

We also liked some areas around Waco, slightly more rural.

In the San Antonio area we like Boerne.

Texas is work friendly with tons of jobs, but honestly I would retire in TN or CO.

Thanks,

The market has slowed, so waiting on the sale of our house.

I am leaning towards Austin area. Having access to a level 1 "complexity" VA is vital. Austin's VA clinic meets that.

Thanks for all the feedback

Rent for the first year and see the different neighborhoods near your daughter.

Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander is an option as mentioned.

The traffic situation here is unbelievably bad, easily the worst in Texas, and getting worse by the day. Every major thoroughfare is either torn-up now or about to be torn-up. Furthermore, the traffic lights are not timed properly, if you have to go through 8 traffic lights you will get stopped at 7 of them. We chose to live in a North Austin location that is about 3 miles from my wife's former work and 4 miles from my former work. For many years this was only a 10 minute commute, maybe 15 minutes during the rush hours, MAX. When my wife retired last year her rush hour commutes were typically taking 45 minutes or longer,...
So this is a Texas epidemic. The traffic, and the traffic signals in Dallas are absolutely infuriating. None of them are timed to flow traffic. It brings a little comfort knowing that Dallas isn't the only place with miserable traffic. I know Houston is equally as miserable, and as crazy as the drivers are here, they're even crazier there. Houston, Austin, Dallas... Severely overcrowded.

Just about to retire from federal service in the coming weeks. If all goes well, this will my last week, worse case, June 15th.

I saw the property taxes, wow!
That's somewhat tempered by the lack of a state tax.

If you have the opportunity to visit for a few days I'd highly recommend it. Rent a car (get the toll option) and drive drive drive, that's a more reliable way to get a feel for a place than online opinions, which unfortunately tend to cater towards the extremes. I'd also recommend checking out the local news websites and watching a few broadcasts, that can give you a bit of a feel for what's going on around town.

If you think Houston is the worst in Texas you haven't visited Austin lately. I go to Houston frequently and it isn't nearly as bad as Austin is now.
They are getting ready to tear I-35 up through the heart of Austin, including removing the upper deck, which means that it will be down to only 2 lanes in each direction for God only knows how long. The trucks are going to be backed-up solid for 50 miles in both directions. They already have I-35 torn-up on the north and south sides of Austin and people are losing their lives on a daily basis because of it. TXDOT is so dysfunctional that it is likely the construction will not be completed for 50 years or longer. Look at how long it has taken them to rebuild I-35W through Ft Worth.

We just got back from there 3 weeks ago.

Been visiting surrounding areas as well.

I've lived in places that were manageable traffic wise, and seen then grow in population faster than the road infrastructure can keep up. It happens in other large metropolitan areas.

I Have to say, the food choices are 10 times better than my current options.

Food trucks are awesome! Regular restaurants are awesome.

Looking forward to that aspect.

You had me until you mentioned CO as a retirement location. CO
🤣
Agreed, CO is not on my retirement list. Used to live there tho. Got tired of shoveling snow, so we left, circa 2018, to come to AZ.

We went to a place called Rebel Cheese (I think that was the name) wife is Vegan, so....
Fantastic food!

I didn’t know about the I-35 construction, but if OP is retired they can avoid this area and find alternative routes.
