For those that have lived, or currently live in the area between San Antonio and Killeen, what is your opinion on living here?

Moving form North Central AZ, low humidity to high humidity will take some getting used to.

Aside from climate, what's the general consensus?

Are you retired or still working ?
Traffic can be very bad in some areas.
Tons of new construction in N Austin region.
Some areas have a homeless problem / crime.

I could live there but I would have to be very close to work.
Lots of things to do in greater Austin area.

Do you have kids still in school ?
Housing is affordable but high property taxes.

Do you have an idea North, South, East, West of the airport ?

Just about to retire from federal service in the coming weeks. If all goes well, this will my last week, worse case, June 15th.

I saw the property taxes, wow!

How spendy are the toll roads? Obviously drive dependant, but... with a pass or something, $20/mo, $100/mo???

Its only high humidity from about now until mid June By then its all burned off and you'll be lucky to see rain until October.
I'm only here because I've been here since 94, my sights are set elsewhere in the 4-6 year timeframe after the kids graduate.
Taxes and local utilities in my area are untenable.

I live just north of Austin. Having moved here in 1979, I've seen many changes. The city of Austin is very liberal, having been the only county to have voted for the democratic presidential candidate pretty much forever. They have been very free-spending on everything except for infrastructure. Seems their motto has been "If we don't build it, they won't come!". Well, "they" came anyway, and the traffic can be (IS) horrible on a good day. A toll road was built around Austin to the east and it's very expensive, relatively speaking. But the speed limit is 80mph to 85mph farther south.

Yes, the summer temps are hot (not like you're not used to it). The humidity is tolerable, especially compared to the coast.

There are many things to do in the area and we're two hours from San Antonio and three hours from Dallas and Houston. To the west is "The Hill Country", and is a great place to be (we used to have some acreage there). Lot's of lakes for fishing, water sports or just to look at.

Property taxes are high, but there's no state income tax.

If we didn't already live here where some of our children and grandchildren live, I can't say I'd move here. My wife and I will soon be retiring and other places would be preferable, but it depends on what you want your retirement to look like.

Part of our goal was being closer to the kids, and closer to a large airport. We are currently 2 hours from PHX, so flying out to see the kids is a bit more cumbersome than living closer to an airport.
And living in PHX is not an option for me.

Has your Wife been talking to my Wife? Almost verbatim what my Wife brings up daily. But at least your grandkids live in Texas, not Denver..... Austin reportedly has some challenges but sure looks within a 50 miles radius of Austin you have unlimited housing options.

With the toll roads and early or late flights, I can typically get to/from the airport in about 30 minutes. My wife used to be a road warrior and traveled to and from the airport twice a week. I now travel every couple of months and it's her turn to make the trips to the airport.

I'm going to guess the toll's are probably $10-ish each way? I'm pretty sure there's a toll calculator for TxTag to get a better idea of the costs between where you may enter and exit.

My wife and I used to head for Austin from Houston on MANY weekends in the 1980s. Now it’s much more of a hassle than a joy. Our daughter lives there and makes good money but pays a bunch in rent etc…. We don’t visit her, she here comes to rural New Mexico to relax. No Humidity, no traffic, no crime. Well, some crime but it is in areas you can avoid, it doesn’t come looking for you.

Every time I flew out of Austin I got the early bird flights, light traffic and breeze through TSA.

If you’re retired you can plan your drives around rush hour and school zones. Not crazy traffic.

Austin has lots of hospitals and very important to consider when you retire. You don’t want to be in an area with few healthcare providers.

Killeen seemed to be a pretty nice town and had affordable housing at the time. I spent several trips there to support Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos) Army units. A lot of military retirees lived there.

I can't personally recommend moving to any location from Georgetown to the north and San Marcos to the south, or from Bastrop to the east and Liberty Hill to the west.
I have lived in/around Austin since 1981. Living in Austin for the first 20 years here were great, not any more. If I could afford to move somewhere else that had good healthcare options, I would.
The traffic situation here is unbelievably bad, easily the worst in Texas, and getting worse by the day. Every major thoroughfare is either torn-up now or about to be torn-up. Furthermore, the traffic lights are not timed properly, if you have to go through 8 traffic lights you will get stopped at 7 of them. We chose to live in a North Austin location that is about 3 miles from my wife's former work and 4 miles from my former work. For many years this was only a 10 minute commute, maybe 15 minutes during the rush hours, MAX. When my wife retired last year her rush hour commutes were typically taking 45 minutes or longer, FOR 3 MILES!!! Living in Austin it may seem like you are close to the airport, but in terms of the time it actually takes to get there (depending on the time of day and where in/around Austin you actually live) you are frequently not going to be significantly closer than the 2 hours it takes for you to get to PHX, then when you get to the airport our TSA screening has gotten so bad that it frequently takes another hour or more (AUS is also all torn-up). The last time I was there 4 weeks ago it took 55 minutes to get through the TSA screening at 5am Wed, it only took 5 minutes to get through TSA screening at PHX coming home.
The Austin the crime situation has also gotten very bad. There has been virtually NO law (or traffic) enforcement here since 2020. You will NEVER see a Police car patrolling. You will NEVER see a vehicle pulled-over. If you get in a wreck the police will NOT come unless there are injuries. If your home (or business or car) is burglarized they will NOT come. If your mail gets stolen (has been happening to me personally about once a month) they will NOT come. If you are assaulted or robbed they will NOT come (unless you are badly injured or there was a gun involved). Austin claims that the crime statistics are showing improvement, but this is because a large percentage of the property crimes are not being reported. Also, the homeless situation has gotten extremely bad and is getting worse by the day, you can't go anywhere without getting accosted by them, and you don't dare leave a home empty for very long or you will find squatters living in it in short order.
On top of everything else housing prices, property taxes, insurance, water, home services, repair and maintenance services, and the general cost of living have gotten way out of hand.
Anyone else that lives in (or in close proximity to) Austin will confirm much of what I am saying.
If you are still thinking about Texas, IMO the best larger cities in Texas to consider right now are parts of San Antonio, El Paso, and Waco.

A family I've known my whole life has lived in the Austin area since the mid-90s and the housing they own has exploded in value in recent years. Another friend of mine lives in Georgetown, TX which is a northern suburb in the Austin area and that is probably where I would want to live if I were to relocate down there. I had my fill of Texas when I was in the Air Force in the early 2000s, I love to visit but I don't know if I would ever want to move back there now.

Thanks all, for your valuable insight!

@wag123,
That's the kind of review people I know here, tell people from CA wanting to come to AZ to discourage them from coming. 😆
I do appreciate the candidinformation.

I'm originally from El Paso, but havent lived there since 1970-something, not sure if that still grants me Texas citizenship or not.

My wife's sister just sold their home in CO to move closer the their kids in another state, but they've been in their home 35 years.
My wife and I have moved 6 times during our marriage.
