Lets talk about Bourbon

I picked up a repeat purchase today, Broken Barrel Cask Strength bourbon. The company has an interesting approach. They source all their whiskey and then infuse it by soaking in a tank with staves from other types of used barrels. For this bourbon they utilize used bourbon, toasted French oak, and sherry cask staves. It's my third bottle over the course of three years so I can vouch for it. $40 for this interesting 115 proof bourbon is fair to me.

Anything Woodford is a treat. Bourbon reviewers look down on Makers Mark but it is my favorite go to bourbon. If I want to treat myself, I'l go to Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, Woodford or Four Roses single barrel. On the rocks.
Blantons is over rated to me, too expensive for what you get and extremely hard to purchase.
I’ve had people over that actually prefer the Makers Mark to Woodford, but you’re right, I have seen some reviews putting Makers down a bit in the bourbon world. I personally love it.

I'm just getting into bourbon, and I've added to my bar...Woodford Reserve (little harsh for me), Makers Mark 46 and Regular Makers Mark (love them both), Bulleit Rye (fantastic), Bulliet Bourbon (ok, kind of plain). IMO.

Looking to add Elijah Craig or Four Roses next. Would love to try Buffalo Trace, but I never can seem to find it. Open for other suggestions. I'm hearing Old Forrester is great for the money.
Get the Four Roses Single barrel. It's the only bourbon that I can taste some fruitiness.

Yep it’s hard to find. My son in law and I finished this bottle of 23 this past weekend
The empty bottle is worth money on eBay. Or he can put some other bourbon in it and tell people it the real deal. Kind of like a fake Rolex.haha

Yep, I told him about Ebay a few yrs back but he is not that kind of guy. As for refilling it, he won't do that and I don't blame him. Besides he has another unopened bottle.

He bought them. Paid dearly for them. Not at the same time of course. I am a scotch drinker and never heard of this stuff till about 5-6 yrs ago and I mentioned to him what some of my scotch cost and he shows me the Pappy and(not getting into a bourbon vs scotch contest) I told him he was crazy, but hey its his thing.

I'd love to try Eagle Rare. Can't find it anywhere around here.
I must be getting lucky. Found the Eagle Rare the other day for $32.

And then this morning in Boston, getting set to get on the train at North Station/Causeway Street. I step in a StarMarket. And I see (of all things) Buffalo Trace. For $29 bucks! I haven’t seen Buffalo Trace anywhere around where I live. And the only other time I’ve ever seen it, it was $40 bucks.

Hopefully they don’t kick me off the train with this stuff.

I've found the Buffalo Trace 750ml at Sam's Club for $21.28 here in Vegas. Years ago I used to find the Balvenie Double Wood 12 year old Scotch for about the same price there, but now it's unobtanium.

While I still enjoy a good single malt, about 10 years ago I started changing my preference from Scotch to bourbon. Woodford Reserve and the premium Beam lines, Knob Creek, Bakers and Bookers, depending on what I could find on sale and stock up on. I'm down to one bottle of Bakers in my hoard, so lately it's been Buffalo Trace because of availability and price.

Based on the comments here, I've started my quest for Eagles Rare.

just a note, later last year guy at a house party breaks out a Costco '6yr Canadian whiskey' claims it is relabeled Crown Royal @$18.99/1.5L, after tasting and a little DD I agreed, it was good..had a friend buy a case of it for me and now I don't think I'll repeat that purchase because the next day I feel seriously poisoned, being a Bourbon guy I don't have experience with Crown Royal maybe it's the same as this Costco swill maybe not but don't jump on cases til after you've tested it on yourself...I have a gallon or so left afraid to come back to it, sticking to Bourbon.

IMO, if you had Crown, you would know it. I always thought it was sweet. Crown was my go to drink years ago until my toddler thought it was apple juice sitting on the coffee table. After that the boss said you must add coke so it's colored. Well no sense drinking the good stuff if I'm gonna add coke. Canadian Club it was for several years after. Now I enjoy Bourbon more than Canadian Whiskey...

good news is that was the last time that kid drank anything alcoholic... Maybe it was a win... ;)

just my $0.02

I like Makers Mark, I'm just on a time out from it. A lifetime time out. Had a little too much one time and my darling spouse rightfully said "no more!".
I get reminded of that night on a semi annual basis. Needless to say, it hasn't been repeated.

Here is , to me a very intersting Company , a different type of processing to age Whiskey and their products....
Of course they sell on the higher end.... but are supposed to be available even at Walmarts. Probably one will be
my next purchase that will get "that look" from the wife when she sees another bottle on the shelf.

I see that Jefferson’s stuff everywhere I go in liquor stores. I haven’t tried it. A friend of mine suggested it, but all the reviews I’ve seen have been negative (so thus far I’ve stayed away).

Well, I was super happy about finding that Buffalo Trace around here...until I opened it and tried it. I’m no expert but it seemed pretty bland (IMO). I made an old fashion and it just couldn’t cut through it. Added MORE bourbon, and nothing. I’ll have to try it neat or with some ice, but it was pretty non existent for me in a mix. Which is weird because some reviews said it had a decent percentage of rye and is at least 6 years old.

Meanwhile a friend came over last night and brought me a bottle of this New England Barrel Company small batch 118 proof stuff and it seemed so much better. A lot more money though. And it’s only a 3.5 year bourbon. I think It’s just basically Kentucky bourbon bought and bottled somewhere locally. And then probably marked way up (it was a $52 dollar bottle). But it was pretty good IMO.
