Lets talk about Bourbon

Tried some Elijah Craig Small Batch at friends recently, very nice flavor and smoooooth. Normally my go-to is Bulleit, but the EC was impressive.
I picked up one of these 50ml mini-bottles of ECSB just the other day, and thought it was pretty good as well.

I have another mini-bottle of Wild Turkey 101 to try also.

I'll have to look around some other stores around me to see if I can find others to sample.
 
I just tried Yellowstone Straight Select Bourbon recently and I was pleasantly surprised. It's actually made in Kentucky as confusing as the name is. The owners donate a percentage of their profit to Yellowstone National Park. It had bits of vanity, spice, leather, etc.

I've cut back on the amount of whiskey I consume so I am willing to pay more for a bottle. That opened up more options. I am really liking barrel proof whiskies right now. If not barrel proof, I've been shooting for 100 proof as the minimum. At these proofs it sounds like there should be a lot of burn, but surprisingly there isn't substantially more than in 80 proof whiskies. The flavor and complexity benefit from the extra alcohol. Plus, if you don't like to drink it that hot you can throw in a cube or a splash of water. My most recent bottle was Broken Barrel cask strength (theirs is 116 proof). Broken Barrel sources its whiskey from other distilleries, blends it, and then infuses it with staves from barrels that previously held other spirits. I've enjoyed all of their whiskies so far. I have been finding a lot of rye whiskies that I enjoy as much as bourbon.

I just bought a bottle of Bulleit on the recommendation of a couple of coworkers. I‘m still a beer guy and prefer mixed drinks if I do want liquor; however, this stuff is pretty tasty on its own. We’ll, by “on its own“ I mean on ice, with a splash of limeade. Very surprised how much I like it.

I took a look at my bottle shop had this on the shelf I have the itch for it didn't get yet. This is bottled exclusively for Kohler and believe it was released for Ryder Cup event.

One of my local liquor stores has its MM Private Selection bottles, too. I'll bet it's decent at cask strength, but I find MM to be a little too "rounded." It has to do with wheat used as the flavoring grain rather than rye. I am a fan of the Maker's 46, though. It's proof point is 94. The addition of the French oak staves to the already matured MM adds that little bit of tannic grip that the regular stuff lacks. That's my taste experience. Everyone's is different. The really pricey, sought after bottles (think Van Winkle) are wheated bourbons, too. They can generally age longer than rye bourbons and develop a lot of nice flavors as a result. Rye bourbons tend to get very oaky after 7-8 years. If you like regular MM, you might like Larceny. That's Heaven Hill's standard wheated bourbon.
 
IMO Woodford is the best followed by Bulleit, Knob Creek. Not had the Old Forester.
Now that I had a chance to try all 4, I would agree. WR was OK. The other three I didn't care for. Old Forester and Bulleit lacked flavor and Knob Creek gave me this massive burn that would linger on seemingly forever - even worse than Evan Williams Single Barrell in that respect.

Buffalo Trace is always a good go to or gotta get up in price. Lol I guess I always like a bozey bourbon such as Wild Turkey101.
