Lets hear from those who dislike HM oil.

On a high miler not worth sinking tons of money into, my brother simply ran 20W-40 in the summer and 10W-30 in the winter, on an engine origially spec'd for either 10W-30 or 5W-30. Oil consumption was reduced to something insignificant, and he was able to run it for a long time pretty much into the ground.

HM in my opinion is not needed. Adjust your viscosity if needed as your vehicle ages.

I'm not refuting that HM oils have good add packs...But it's nebulous when it is being proven over and over and over that the current conventionl oils are keeping engines spotless when used in a propper OCI.

Mobil 1 HM and Maxlife full syn are both excellent oils and I would not hesiate to use them in any new or older ca... Both clean as well as any oil and also have superior add packs, especially Mobil 1 HM.

Yes, I've debated with Caterham before on the benefits of M1 HM. He says it's a marketing stunt, and advocates using their 0w's because those are Mobil's most leading-edge formulations. While I much respect Caterham's viewpoint, I have looked at the pds's, and find some aspects of M1 HM that make it better for my car at this stage in its life than the basic M1 that I had been using. I particularly like the HTHS, which is 10% higher in the HM than it is in M1 5w30 or M1 AFE 0w30.

Others also have said that M1 HM is an older formulation. I agree that's probably true because none of M1 HM's are SM-rated. This is not necessarily a bad thing. It would make HM the formulation that was current when my car was new. It does have more anti-wear additive than the SM-rated M1, so that is a definite plus.

None of this is to say that I won't switch to the "Caterham Cocktail" of M1 0w30 mixed with M1 0w40 on my next oil change.

I don't have a problem with high mileage oils, and have used them in the past. My rule of thumb is to not use them unless necessary. I certainly don't believe in using them at only 75,000 miles unless seals are starting to go bad from age on a car that doesn't get driven much.

If there's a small leak, I would try high mileage oil. Otherwise, why bother? Conventional works just fine, and is getting better as time goes on.

+1, thank you.

Good post, I use HM oils more for their cleaning abilities(those that I notice that do help in this area) and if it reduces oil consumption on such cars, great, if not oh well...and I only use it sparingly as well. Not as a permanent oil to use, unless I just don't have anything else of preference.
