On a high miler not worth sinking tons of money into, my brother simply ran 20W-40 in the summer and 10W-30 in the winter, on an engine origially spec'd for either 10W-30 or 5W-30. Oil consumption was reduced to something insignificant, and he was able to run it for a long time pretty much into the ground.
HM in my opinion is not needed. Adjust your viscosity if needed as your vehicle ages.
