The one credit card I use... I log into it every day....just to check and see what have posted and pay it off....
After I got thoroughly hacked in 2017, I've set all of my cards/bank accounts to notify me for just about everything. I think one of the cards will notify me if someone in the vicinity sneezes...My Capital One card sends me an email notice of any charges over $100. I think I set the trigger amnt.
Helpful to head off any shenanigans

And autopay for anything is a big "nope" for me.
Me neither, but that would require I looked at the statement... Mea Culpa.I'm not sure it would be possible for me to not immediately notice a $40 bill going to $300. I watch my bank account like a hawk for this reason.
You are just being logical again.I have to get out more often, I would have assumed that most everyone takes a look at the charges on their credit card statement before they pay the bill.
Yes, this is at least partly a problem with the FasTrak service. The car title was changed and I entered a release of ownership. I know who I gave the car to. I even have an email string with FasTrak when several charges came back to me.Point is, tolls should have become associated with the new registration of the same tag, I would think/hope. So OP perhaps needs to check more, because the owner may be driving unregistered, and the car is still associated with OP’s short ownership.
I need to take a lesson, that's clear and the jist of my thread.
But it's more than the money. It is the disappointment that trying to help a needy family results in being ripped off.
I appreciate all the good advice.
Some of my card carriers do this, sort of. If I make a charge out of the ordinary, they'll deny it and send a text/email. If I reply that it's legit, I'll get a message that I should try the transaction again and it will work this time.I’m not sure why we can’t have MFA for large charges. As in when a large purchase or other metric (out of state or country / threshold set by cardholder) is made, cardholder gets a text to approve or deny the charge before the charge is processed. I would use it.
TurboTax has entered the chatI saw one come through for Nord VPN. I canceled my account with them years ago. What a nightmare that was getting it sorted out.
Even though my credit card number changed multiple times since then, somehow they were able to "accidentally" bill me.

I think the answer is you could make close to $140,000 if you invested a billion bucks for one day at 5% per annum, either that or my calculator is broken: 1,000,000,000 * 0.05 / 365How much could you make in 24 hours on a billion bucks even at 5% (5 million bucks).
But the insurance companies probably get far better than 5% return
New mansions, Jets and Yachts !
Even that's not 100%. B-I-L got hacked twice using virtual numbers.virtual card numbers for online stuff.
many, not all, card companies offer them
