Lesson learned; PLEASE check your credit card statements!

Everytime a charge is made, I get an email, SMS, and app notification. If I'm in a drive through, the car speakers are dinging like crazy for all of the alerts.

Regardless, this cannot be relied upon but it is interesting to see when auto renewals and months charges are coming through.

My Capital One card sends me an email notice of any charges over $100. I think I set the trigger amnt.
Helpful to head off any shenanigans
After I got thoroughly hacked in 2017, I've set all of my cards/bank accounts to notify me for just about everything. I think one of the cards will notify me if someone in the vicinity sneezes... 🤣

And autopay for anything is a big "nope" for me.

I’m not sure why we can’t have MFA for large charges. As in when a large purchase or other metric (out of state or country / threshold set by cardholder) is made, cardholder gets a text to approve or deny the charge before the charge is processed. I would use it.

My dad taught me as a young man with my first credit card, the importance of reconciling the monthly statement with my charges. I still get a receipt for every charge. Which is also essential for tax purposes. I do NOTHING with auto-pay. I and/or the wife approve every charge. We also get immediate alerts of every charge.

We also never carry a balance month-to-month.

Point is, tolls should have become associated with the new registration of the same tag, I would think/hope. So OP perhaps needs to check more, because the owner may be driving unregistered, and the car is still associated with OP’s short ownership.
Yes, this is at least partly a problem with the FasTrak service. The car title was changed and I entered a release of ownership. I know who I gave the car to. I even have an email string with FasTrak when several charges came back to me.

The man unexpectedly died and his family took the car. I believe I have the name of the current owner.
The car is under another person's FasTrak account; his account bills to my credit card. That's the rub, aka fraud.

There are 2 Bozos here, FasTrak and me. We each made mistakes.

I need to take a lesson, that's clear and the jist of my thread.
But it's more than the money. It is the disappointment that trying to help a needy family results in being ripped off.

I appreciate all the good advice.

No good deed goes unpunished.

I learned that with my oldest sister, a cousin, and various people who at one time I called friends.

Some of my card carriers do this, sort of. If I make a charge out of the ordinary, they'll deny it and send a text/email. If I reply that it's legit, I'll get a message that I should try the transaction again and it will work this time.

I saw one come through for Nord VPN. I canceled my account with them years ago. What a nightmare that was getting it sorted out.

Even though my credit card number changed multiple times since then, somehow they were able to "accidentally" bill me.

How did they charge a credit card number they didn’t have access to?

That's what I still don't understand.
I canceled in 2021. I have confirmations and everything. My CC number changed at least twice since then. Their support kept telling me to sign into the portal, etc but I couldn't because the account was canceled for four years. FINALLY was able to get through to them and it was actually legit and I got my money back

How much could you make in 24 hours on a billion bucks even at 5% (5 million bucks).
But the insurance companies probably get far better than 5% return
New mansions, Jets and Yachts !
I think the answer is you could make close to $140,000 if you invested a billion bucks for one day at 5% per annum, either that or my calculator is broken: 1,000,000,000 * 0.05 / 365
