Lawn mower break in oil change?

Jumping on this thread with appropriate title …
did Kohler 5400 at 5 hours - used M1 EP 10W30 + Fram XG3614
anyone doing a 2nd ‘early’ - or (now with 20 micron filter) run all summer as a minimum ? (Mostly ”mow” leaves post summer)

I always do early and often oil changes in my small engines. Your engine has an oil filter, so another early change may not be as important.
Personally, I would do an oil and filter change after another 10 hours (most likely not needed and a waste of money, but I'd feel better if it were mine).

I think I did my first oil and filter change in my Kohler at around 10 -12 hrs . Now I change it once a year . 5 yrs old and doing just fine .

Right on - I did the 5 … so will do a 15 hour … leave filter on … that drain will rid metals below 20 micron … yearly from there …

I see this is an old post that I replied too....

Well my positive review of the engine I would like to remove lol. It burns oil now. Smokes for 5 minutes once started. Its 8 years old and junk. Always ran synthetic oil. It barely has any hours on it. I have a small yard.

The last Briggs for me.

Just got a new Zero Turn JD Z320M and it doesn't mention break in oil. Just change at 50 hrs. Going to see what the oil temp is after a mow when it's hot before I change. Planning on using 5w30. It's an engine only oil.

After a two hour mow at 88F the oil temp was ~250F. I changed it at 5 hrs with some sparkly stuff in it. Used 5w30 Citgo Supergard synthetic. They put a handy oil drain hose on it but it's about 3" too short IMHO as if it's windy it will blow the oil all over the tractor or ground.

Probably be transferring the oil cooler and gauge set from the old F510 mower to the Z320M. Mount the cooler over the flywheel screen. Plenty of room for a bigger oil filter too.

I'm curious - Did you run it hard under load when you first bought it? How many hours on the engine?

My Lowes Troy-Built HONDA engine mower doesn't have a drain. Once a year, I run it out of gas, then flip it over to drain the oil. Pain in the you know what, but only do it once a year, so not a huge deal.

Deck is starting to rust out and the wheels (one was replaced) are on last legs (wheels or whatever....)

Gonna run it until its dead......going on 9 or 10 years now.

My new EGO mower doesn’t say anything about break-in oil change. Come to think of it, it doesn’t mention oil at all. Weird.

B&S has done a good job with improving air filtration in recent years. The 810cc Commercial Turf engine on my Ferris ZTR has a nice setup.
I would expect most of your break-in metals to show up in the first hour, so I would change it after the first mow, then again after maybe 3 more mows, then follow the recommendations. You can probably go all year without hitting the hour mark for changing it, so just change it at the end of the season. Don't let the used oil sit in the engine all Winter.

I cut the grass with it. Changed the oil in 30 minutes. Always a yearly oil change. I would be surprised if it has 50 hours on it. It takes 10 minutes to cut my grass over the last 8 years. I took a video of it starting this spring. Smoke show!!!

I really didn't change it after 5 hours. I was keeping a mental note on the usage but I definitely went over. My over under says it will be just fine, maybe I changed it at 9 or 10 hours. btw I'm talking about a push mower.
